Assignment 1: The Annotated Bibliography – Due Week 3
Project Overview: For this project, you’ll choose a food or drink item, a cuisine, an invention, or an idea, and then research how four geographic concepts are related to and affect your topic. Instead of presenting your research as a traditional paper, you’ll use PowerPoint to create a narrated presentation. Your presentation will be structured like a paper, including a title, introduction to the topic, main body, summary and conclusions, and references. Creative use of properly cited graphics and photos from the Internet relevant to your topic is required.
First, choose a food item, cuisine, invention, or idea that interests you. Some will have more information available about them than others, so it’s worth doing some investigation before you settle on one. If you’re not sure if your desired topic is appropriate, please feel free to ask!
Once you have selected your topic, you will then do research to see how each of the following geographic concepts affects or is related to your topic:1. Regions 2. Cultural Landscape 3. Diffusion 4. Distance decay. The first two concepts are covered in the first chapter of your textbook. Diffusion is covered in Chapter 8, Section 2 (page 484). Distance decay refers to the fact that influence and interaction between locations decreases as the distance between them increases. As such, it has a significant influence on how things change as they diffuse away from their point of origin. Be sure to address these specific geographic terms and concepts in your work. You don’t need to address them in this order, but you do need to address all of them. You may use “subsets” of these definitions (e.g. contagious diffusion) if such subsets exist. Be sure to refer to your text and other reliable resources to ensure you completely understand these concepts. You should be detailed in your treatment of these concepts – for instance, you should explain both how and why your choice varies by region, and how and why it has been affected by distance decay. Remember that geography, as an academic discipline, seeks to explain why things vary from place to place, not just describe how they do.
You will complete this project in 3 separate assignments: an annotated bibliography, an outline, and your final presentation. In this assignment, you will complete your annotated bibliography. Completing the project in separate assignments allows you to work your way up to the final presentation, and provides opportunity for feedback along the way.
Assignment Objective: Assess sources for your research for your final presentation (for credibility, reliability, and relevance) and list references in proper APA format through the creation of an annotated bibliography.
Assignment Instructions: An annotation is a summary and evaluation, and your annotated bibliography will include a summary and evaluation of some of the sources (or references) you will use for your presentation.
To prepare for this assignment, I recommend that you do the following:
Read these directions carefully.
Review the sample annotated bibliography provided to you below.
Read the grading criteria below. The grading criteria is a detailed evaluation that I will use to assess your performance. It also will help you understand what is expected you as you prepare your assignment.
Message me with any questions!
The reason the annotated bibliography is included as part of the research project is that writing an annotated bibliography provides excellent preparation for the final presentation. One of the issues regarding any type of research is the credibility of the sources used, particularly those obtained from various websites. By forcing you to evaluate your potential sources carefully, the annotated bibliography helps you determine if the sources you chose are credible and relevant to your topic. It will also help you understand the topic better, which will help you develop your presentation.
For this project, you will assess three sources to include:
1) a complete citation for each source,
2) a summary of each source, and
3) an evaluation of each source.
Three sources are required for this assignment (i.e., you are to write an annotation for each source). However, you must use five or more sources in your final presentation.
Use the TEMPLATE below to summarize and evaluate each of your three sources.
Citation:
Written in APA reference list format. For more help with formatting, see APA handout
Summary:
What is the purpose of the source, review article, original research? What topics are covered? This section is generally 3-5 sentences that summarize the author’s main point. For more help, see this link on paraphrasing sources.
Evaluation:
After summarizing the article (or research paper or book), it is necessary to evaluate it and state where you found it – its source (e.g.,journal, website, etc.). Briefly answer the following questions in 3-5 sentences:
What is the format or type of source (e.g., peer-reviewed journal paper, website, book)? How reliable is the information in the article, and how credible is the source (e.g., website’s sponsoring organization, journal or book publisher) and the author(s)?
For more help, see this handout on evaluating resources.

History.com. (2018). The Surprising History behind your Japanese Cuisine. Retrieved from History.com: https://www.history.co.uk/articles/the-surprising-history-behind-your-favourite-japanese-cuisine
This article provides a general overview of Japanese Cuisine. It provides the history and origins of commonly eaten Japanese cuisines that are enjoyed around the world today. Although this is merely a review of the topic, it is also providing an idea about some of the required geographic concepts as provided in the course, namely; (1) diffusion and (2) distance decay. On the one hand, it discusses the idea of diffusion, particularly the effect of the Great Kanto Earthquake (i.e., diffusion through relocation) and modern refrigeration to the spread of Sushi in Japan and around the world, respectively. On the other hand, distance decay is also portrayed based on how other Japanese cuisines like instant ramen are prepared through a technological approach.
This source is written by History.com. It is written not merely as a blog post but as an informational publication that provides a short summary of the history of Japanese cuisine. History.com has a strong reputation as a company that produces many documentaries and publications about history and historical artifacts. Hence, this article is also somehow credible.

Fortunately, many college students can list the 6 to 8 steps of the scientific method but do not know how to apply the scientific method to other things. That is, it is one thing to answer a test, another thing to live the experience. It is often very difficult to comprehend the parts of science. This is especially true when urban centers provide all things for individuals. However, individuals even in groups that are provided learn a group function. That is, they acquire a process to accomplish things. The process is trial and error which is the basis of science. Therein,
● An argument can be made that in everyday life there is science. For example, a person may need to go from one place to another.
● They have to start with a basic idea of what is the best path. This idea is the hypothesis. Not necessarily true but something testable.
● They must then travel and collect information about the journey. The information if charted is data.
The data can be used to make predictions about continuing the path daily or how a different path may be better. Ultimately-overtime by trial and error several paths are chosen, each one will have its own advantages, and there will now be choices; not one answer.
________________________________________
Therefore in a LAB course there may be more than one acceptable answer for a question but….that is based on the answers which must match the data presented. Meaning, it is not speculation. The path is decided by experience.
A: The initial idea of; there is a path which will get to where I am going is a testable question. All science is based on this one criteria of being testable.
B: Second, the path must be able to be taken by others in the future. Science must be repeatable.
Therefore, if something is testable and repeatable then it is the realm of science.
________________________________________
Many things we encounter or rely on daily are science in principle and many are applied science.
● A science principle is some idea which is science based and possible.
● Applied science is the idea in action.
● The first is a hypothesis the second is the test/experiment
The method of experiential ideas, and data collection is what science essentially is. Therefore, many have been doing science for sometime. However, some will forget the basics and use speculation as science when they are missing the data. Simply, no evidence or data equals no science. It is a simple yet important distinction.

Instructions: Essay on Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen
Has to be exactly 1500 words, no fewer and not many more
The topic of the Essay:
The very first sentence of the book Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, though it seems to focus on men, raises the question: what about the women in the novel, the prospective wives of these men “in want of a wife”? If such a single man “must be in want of a wife,” what is a single woman in want of, when it comes to marriage? In light of this first sentence of Pride and Prejudice, discuss the situation, attitude, and actions of the following four women in the book, with regard to courtship and marriage: Elizabeth Bennet, Charlotte Lucas, Jane Bennet, and Lydia Bennet. Remember to talk about each of the four women in four different paragraphs, meaning one paragraph per woman. Consider the two meanings of the word “want,” the thinking of the women about marriage, and their situation with respect to social position and “fortune.” Concentrate on the most interesting cases, while considering secondary characters as they shed light on the main cases. In looking briefly at secondary characters, you might consider those men and women who are not engaged or married at novel’s end.
Notice, then, the explicit mention of a “good fortune.” What about a man without a good fortune? Does the possession of a good fortune matter in the case of the women? And a further consideration: although the main focus of the novel would seem to be on courtship leading to marriage, you might briefly consider a couple of cases where a couple has already been married, briefly or for a longer time: Charlotte and Collins (the only couple we see in both courtship and marriage), the elder Lucas’s, the Bennet’s, the Gardiners.
Make sure that your essay has a clear thesis and a title that indicates the focus of your discussion. 6 pages / approx 1650 words | Essay | Literature & Language | MLA | Undergraduate |

Recommend at least one (1) action that the law enforcement could take in order to investigate such a suicide crime.
The National Center on Elder Abuse indicates that seniors are the fastest-growing population in the United States. It is apparent that as this populace becomes more physically frail, they are seemingly a greater target for the unscrupulous to take advantage. Discuss the main reasons why abuse of seniors is recognized yet usually goes unreported. Next, suggest one (1) action that citizens or family members could take to reduce elder abuse. Provide a rationale to support your response.
3. “Sexual Assault Evidence and Forms of Abuse among Children” Please respond to the following:
It is common knowledge that rape and sexual assault investigations provide evidence such as stained or torn clothing, scratches, bruises and cuts used to solve the crime. Determine at least three (3) other forms of evidence associated with a rape or sexual assault. Next, recommend at least one (1) action that the law enforcement could take in order to investigate such a crime.
The textbook cites that the four (4) most common types of abuse among children are neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. Select one (1) out of the four (4) types of abuse among children. Next, determine the key challenges that the investigator may confront while investigating the abuse you selected. Suggest one (1) strategy geared toward mitigating the challenges you determined. Provide a rationale to support your response. 1 page / approx 275 words | APA | Coursework | Law | Undergraduate |

Instructions: In no more than six sentences, explore the connection between your two annotated passages in the following way.
Pick two passages from the novel Beloved, Pick one motif or technique shared by both passages and compare and contrast how this technique or motif is used in each. Then imagine what problem or question the novel is trying to think through in these two passages. Your claim should articulate your judgment about what important question or problem is at issue in these passages. You do not have to say how the novel solves this problem or answers this question. In fact, you should not attempt to. Your task is use close analysis of the language of the passages to identify that question with as much nuance and precision as you can.

In fact, you should not attempt to. Your task is use close analysis of the language of the passages to identify that question with as much nuance and precision as you can.
Hint 1: Perhaps the best way to make a claim about what question the passages are preoccupied with is to use the following template:
Through the motif/technique of _____________, these passages pose the question of what/how/why/to what extent/under what conditions __________________.
In the blank there should be at least one noun, maybe more, and at least one verb, and the noun should name the crucial topic that the passages are exploring. If you decide not to use this template, you may be avoiding the task in the prompt.
Hint 2: Motif should not be confused with topic or theme. Remember that a motif is a concrete image or phrase that is repeated across the novel and that out of which a significant pattern is made. Death or memory are topics; “rememory” or “chokecherry tree” or 124’s “white staircase” or “pieces” or “weight” or “A man ain’t nothin but a man” are motifs. A novel like Beloved says what it has to say about the topics it is concerned with by developing its motifs in the way that it does.
Hint 3: Although you do not have to focus on point of view as your technique, you should be mindful of which characters’ thoughts are being reported in the passages you’ve chosen. As we’ve seen, the narrative function within this novel is almost always to report the thoughts of particular characters. 1 page / approx 275 words | APA | English (US) 🇺🇸 | Essay | Literature & Language | Undergraduate |

Immanuel Kant dares you to show what you know about early modern Europe. He asks that you focus solely on the materials from this course. Kant freaks out when he reads things taken from random websites or other material not assigned in the course. The idea is to think about what we did specifically in this class. (For example, ONLY FROM TEXTBOOK LIKE THE EUROPEAN WORLD, LIVES UNCOVERED, http://www.humanrights.com/what-are-human-rights.html, http://chnm.gmu.edu/revolution/etc),
Kant politely asks that you write at least 550 to 750 words (2+ to 3 pages, typed and double-spaced) on one of the topics below (a little more is fine too). This is a thought essay but do try to have a clear thesis and provide some examples or evidence from course texts where appropriate.
1. Did life for the “average” person change in fundamental ways between 1400 and 1800? If you took the average man or woman, say a farmer/peasant, craftsperson, small-time merchant, or their wife, and compared their lives in 1400 and in 1800 how much do you think their lives had changed? What aspects of life changed the most, and what changed the least? You can think in terms of their everyday lives, their work, their leisure, their homes, their education, occupational opportunities and the like. How might they view things like religion, politics or medicine? Was the average person’s life fundamentally the same or different in important and essential ways?
You can focus on a single “type” or look at more than one but focus has advantages. Be clear about gender, status and profession as you think about this—as well as where the person lived. You can make comparisons to others whose lives might have changed more or less (in the same time period).
2. What was not modern about early modern Europe? Some scholars view the period from roughly 1400 to 1800 as marking the beginning of modernity, hence the period is called early modern. Others believe it is more useful to think of the period as an extension of earlier history, and that industrialization marks the real break toward modernity. The period did witness many changes but these do not necessarily mark out a linear movement toward modernity. So write about the ways the period was not modern.
3. By 1800 Europe had emerged “as the major driving force behind global developments.” (Kümin, 2nd ed, p 362) In what specific ways was Europe a driving force in the world by 1800? How had Europe come to play this role? What were the limitations of European influence? Be sure to include that last point and be careful to look at expansion only up to 1800 and not include the extensive colonization of the nineteenth century in your answer. 3 pages / approx 825 words | APA | Essay | History | Undergraduate |

When we know that others do have the same experiences, do not see the same things, and have a different world view we can begin to acknowledge their differences as a result of their worldview and not always an absolute sense of knowing we are us and yet we alone are right.
