What is Fry’s new evolutionary perspective as described in Ch. 13 of Beyond War? How does he use this new perspective to understand the place of warfare in human life? In answering this question, make sure you address the following:
–What long-standing framework for human evolution does Fry argue against? Give an example of why he opposes it.
–What does his new model argue about the role of violence in human evolution (this relates to hawks, doves, and retaliators)?
–What theories and research strategies underpin his model?
–On what kind of evidence does Fry place emphasis?
–Do you find Fry’s model compelling? Why or why not?

A New Evolutionary Perspective – The Nomadic Forager Model
Ever since the inception of Darwin’s Evolutionary theory, several debates about how natural selection really works have arisen. One of these debates concern natural selection based on how individual actions affect a group. On the one hand, some scholars note that human’s innate of helping one another accounts for an increase in their fitness as a group. Among this observation that came from a positive light is the ‘Inclusive Fitness Theory’. Particularly, it states that “helping relatives is an indirect way of enhancing one’s fitness” (Fry 179). On the other hand, however, Fry’s Nomadic Forager Model states that humans are naturally inclined to apply aggression against others, as long as its perceived benefits outweigh the costs (180).

This theory stems from his analysis of historical accounts of anthropological works, as well as knowledge of game theory.

It’s a concert report and here is the requirement: “The objective of this paper is to connect what you hear during the concert to the content of the course and your own personal/cultural experiences, and to also attempt to express in words your general reaction to the music. You may describe how the music “made you feel,” but always follow up that statement with why you believe the music made you feel that way. In a similar vein, stay away from subjective comments concerning whether you liked or disliked the music, and instead use the information we’ve discussed during the course to make informed statement about the music itself. You are also encouraged to take notes during the performances if possible (only with pen and paper, absolutely not with a laptop) and, more importantly, research the pieces being performed before you attend the concert. You can then ask yourself, among other questions, are the pieces being performed indicative of the time period in which they were composed? A piece composed in the 1700’s probably won’t have the same aural properties as a piece composed in 2018. Why is that? The most important thing to do during a concert is to ask the question: why? If the chorus of a song gets you really excited, or if the slow movement of a sonata “sounds” morose, try to identify what it is about the collection of sounds that works or doesn’t work using the information we’ve learned in class. Sometimes you may be able to identify the exact reasons a passage has certain aural properties, but sometimes you won’t, in which case you should either try to make an educated guess as to what the music is “doing,” or try to make an educated guess on why you perceive the piece a certain way.” Try to use some music vocabulary in this report, like “dynamic”, “Tempo”, “Major key or minor key”

In no more than six sentences, explore the connection between your two annotated passages in the following way. Pick two passages from the novel Beloved, Pick one motif or technique shared by both passages and compare and contrast how this technique or motif is used in each. Then imagine what problem or question the novel is trying to think through in these two passages. Your claim should articulate your judgment about what important question or problem is at issue in these passages. You do not have to say how the novel solves this problem or answers this question. In fact, you should not attempt to. Your task is use close analysis of the language of the passages to identify that question with as much nuance and precision as you can. In fact, you should not attempt to. Your task is use close analysis of the language of the passages to identify that question with as much nuance and precision as you can. Hint 1: Perhaps the best way to make a claim about what question the passages are preoccupied with is to use the following template: Through the motif/technique of _____________, these passages pose the question of what/how/why/to what extent/under what conditions __________________. In the blank there should be at least one noun, maybe more, and at least one verb, and the noun should name the crucial topic that the passages are exploring. If you decide not to use this template, you may be avoiding the task in the prompt. Hint 2: Motif should not be confused with topic or theme. Remember that a motif is a concrete image or phrase that is repeated across the novel and that out of which a significant pattern is made. Death or memory are topics; “rememory” or “chokecherry tree” or 124’s “white staircase” or “pieces” or “weight” or “A man ain’t nothin but a man” are motifs. A novel like Beloved says what it has to say about the topics it is concerned with by developing its motifs in the way that it does. Hint 3: Although you do not have to focus on point of view as your technique, you should be mindful of which characters’ thoughts are being reported in the passages you’ve chosen. As we’ve seen, the narrative function within this novel is almost always to report the thoughts of particular characters.

Kindly use this example. Policy Brief Infectious Diseases, Tuberculosis in India From: Secretary of Health, India To: Minister of Finance, India Introduction: 400,000 Indians die each year from TB. It is the leading cause of death in the ages 15-45 and has the greatest affect on the poverty stricken regions. Several risk factors for TB are HIV, lack of knowledge, urban congestion and pollution, barriers in health care, and cultural differences. TB causes large economic losses, financial burdens to poor families, losses in education, and even familial rejection of infected women. To address TB we must promote DOT in the poorest sectors to improve knowledge and treatment, ensure efficient technology for diagnosis, and target HIV prevalent areas for proper treatment for co-infected patients.

Why does Coser believe that conflict is good for society? Discuss a real-life example in which a social conflict followed and lent support to Coser’s theory. Discuss a real-life example of the Thomas Theorem: “If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences.” What does this mean to you? How can it be applied to the example you’ve identified? “Conflict theory” derives from the critical work of Karl Marx on economic inequality under capitalism; Coser’s analysis comes from structural-functionalism. How might social conflict be understood using symbolic interactionism? Come up with and discuss an application of this theory to the question of conflict.

Here are two situations that working journalists might face. Choose one and discuss what is involved in a way that demonstrates your knowledge of media law and ethics (5 PTS each) A. You are a political reporter. A candidate for the State Senate had a nervous breakdown ten years ago. The candidate’s opponent has slipped you a notarized hospital document confirming this fact. In an essay that demonstrates your journalism knowledge, discuss whether or not you should print the story and the legal and ethical reasons why. Include the factors involved, the risks if you don’t print it, and the risks if you do print it. B. Your friend is the lead singer of a rock group. Despite your objections, your editor insists that you review their performance tonight. But at the show, your friend is drunk; it’s obvious to everyone and it’s a terrible show. If you write an honest review, you could ruin his reputation. He asks you to come back the next night, when he promises to stay sober and do a great show. Explain what you would do and the legal and ethical factors that would influence your decision—why you should go, why you shouldn’t go, what you would ultimately write, and what the consequences could be.
