1. Why do you think Alexie in Absolutely True Diary and Baldwin in “Sonny’s Blues” decided to tell their stories partly through artforms other than words? We see many of Junior’s drawings, and in several styles, and Baldwin uses contrasting musical styles as a key motif in “Sonny’s Blues.” Write one or two paragraphs on each work (do not compare and contrast.) For background on Alexie, read the interview with illustrator Ellen Forney at the back of ‘Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.” Why does the book use contrasting styles and how does it tie in with writing styles/moods from chapter to chapter? For Baldwin, listen to and learn about the radical change from traditional jazz (like Louis Armstrong), to modern Bebop (‘Bird’/Charlie Parker). Do some web research before you write. Why did many middle-class, religious, and older blacks attack and dislike Bebop? Who in ‘Sonny’s Blues’ is aligned with each? Urinalysis This is a Hands-On Labs exercise that explores the characteristics of urine and what can cause those characteristics to change. You will be doing a visual inspection of urine and testing it with urinalysis test strips to assess the concentration of various compounds that may be present. Procedure Follow the directions for the Urinalysis experiment. Perform both parts: fasting and drinking distilled water. Record the data from the visual inspection and from the test strips in tables. Use that data to write a report, following the directions below for submission. **You do not need to submit the Lab Report Assistant**. Create a Report Use the following outline to describe the data from your lab in a report. Label each portion of the lab as described below. Introduction: Start with a broad discussion of urine formation, and then narrow your focus to the question(s) that you are trying to answer. Conclude the introduction with a hypothesis—a statement that reflects what you believe the outcome of this lab will be. It’s a good idea to include a discussion of how you think each characteristic of urine tested will change between the fasting and distilled water consumption parts. Material List: Identify all items that you used and the exact quantities, as applicable. This may be a very short section. Methods: Describe how you conducted the experiment, including any safety precautions you took while performing the lab. Be sure to include any changes that you made to the original instructions. The next step in the process of acquiring information is to move past what we can think of onto what we can see. That is, we have the way things are done and how to do them but we have not yet touched the work. In this case, we begin by reviewing some information regarding a trend towards bipedalism based on an arbitrary scale. That is, we use diagnostic features we can see and judge for ourselves. Although some may believe arbitrary assessments to be vague or assumptive, this step is sometimes used by those who know about the subject. That is we have spent many weeks getting to the point where you are trained observers. That is what you see matters and you will now “show what you can do with what you know.” This quick step is used to give immediate feedback to guide the path of inquiry. For example, an arbitrary scale can give values which can be interpreted as useful or not. The values can also be added to a graph which may show connections, divergence, and trends. Although the arbitrary assessments may be cursory they can be used to help make predictions. The predictions can aid in a direction of inquiry such as future experimental design to pursue a lead or quickly and simply rule out an assumption. An assumption in science can be either a premise for an idea based on experience, or a prediction based on prior data. That is, the premise from an informed previous statement can lead to inquiry. Informed statements come from experience or existing data. Therefore, an assumption in science is very different from how assumptions are used in daily activities by many non-scientists. Here we may assume that the diagnostics features listed in the drawing plantigrade, digitigrade, unguligrade highlight things of interest in relation to patterns of locomotion, in this case distinctions of speed and power compared to bipedalism. The essay is to analytically compare and contrast two fictional heroes or two fictional villains. This means that you will not only detail some of the similarities and differences, but you will discuss why those differences and similarities might exist and what the effect of the differences and similarities (on the audience, society, etc.) might be.
