Assignment 1: The Annotated Bibliography – Due Week 3 Project Overview: For this project, you’ll choose a food or drink item, a cuisine, an invention, or an idea, and then research how four geographic concepts are related to and affect your topic. Instead of presenting your research as a traditional paper, you’ll use PowerPoint to create a narrated presentation. Your presentation will be structured like a paper, including a title, introduction to the topic, main body, summary and conclusions, and references. Creative use of properly cited graphics and photos from the Internet relevant to your topic is required. First, choose a food item, cuisine, invention, or idea that interests you. Some will have more information available about them than others, so it’s worth doing some investigation before you settle on one. If you’re not sure if your desired topic is appropriate, please feel free to ask! Once you have selected your topic, you will then do research to see how each of the following geographic concepts affects or is related to your topic:1. Regions 2. Cultural Landscape 3. Diffusion 4. Distance decay. The first two concepts are covered in the first chapter of your textbook. Diffusion is covered in Chapter 8, Section 2 (page 484). Distance decay refers to the fact that influence and interaction between locations decreases as the distance between them increases. As such, it has a significant influence on how things change as they diffuse away from their point of origin. Be sure to address these specific geographic terms and concepts in your work. You don’t need to address them in this order, but you do need to address all of them. You may use “subsets” of these definitions (e.g. contagious diffusion) if such subsets exist. Be sure to refer to your text and other reliable resources to ensure you completely understand these concepts. You should be detailed in your treatment of these concepts – for instance, you should explain both how and why your choice varies by region, and how and why it has been affected by distance decay. Remember that geography, as an academic discipline, seeks to explain why things vary from place to place, not just describe how they do. You will complete this project in 3 separate assignments: an annotated bibliography, an outline, and your final presentation. In this assignment, you will complete your annotated bibliography. Completing the project in separate assignments allows you to work your way up to the final presentation, and provides opportunity for feedback along the way. Assignment Objective: Assess sources for your research for your final presentation (for credibility, reliability, and relevance) and list references in proper APA format through the creation of an annotated bibliography. Assignment Instructions: An annotation is a summary and evaluation, and your annotated bibliography will include a summary and evaluation of some of the sources (or references) you will use for your presentation. To prepare for this assignment, I recommend that you do the following: Read these directions carefully. Review the sample annotated bibliography provided to you below. Read the grading criteria below.The grading criteria is a detailed evaluation that I will use to assess your performance. It also will help you understand what is expected you as you prepare your assignment. Message me with any questions! The reason the annotated bibliography is included as part of the research project is that writing an annotated bibliography provides excellent preparation for the final presentation. One of the issues regarding any type of research is the credibility of the sources used, particularly those obtained from various websites. By forcing you to evaluate your potential sources carefully, the annotated bibliography helps you determine if the sources you chose are credible and relevant to your topic. It will also help you understand the topic better, which will help you develop your presentation. For this project, you will assess three sources to include: 1) a complete citation for each source, 2) a summary of each source, and 3) an evaluation of each source. Three sources are required for this assignment (i.e., you are to write an annotation for each source). However, you must use five or more sources in your final presentation. Use the TEMPLATE below to summarize and evaluate each of your three sources. Citation: Written in APA reference list format. It’s a concert report and here is the requirement: “The objective of this paper is to connect what you hear during the concert to the content of the course and your own personal/cultural experiences, and to also attempt to express in words your general reaction to the music. You may describe how the music “made you feel,” but always follow up that statement with why you believe the music made you feel that way. In a similar vein, stay away from subjective comments concerning whether you liked or disliked the music, and instead use the information we’ve discussed during the course to make informed statement about the music itself. You are also encouraged to take notes during the performances if possible (only with pen and paper, absolutely not with a laptop) and, more importantly, research the pieces being performed before you attend the concert. You can then ask yourself, among other questions, are the pieces being performed indicative of the time period in which they were composed? A piece composed in the 1700’s probably won’t have the same aural properties as a piece composed in 2018. Why is that? The most important thing to do during a concert is to ask the question: why? If the chorus of a song gets you really excited, or if the slow movement of a sonata “sounds” morose, try to identify what it is about the collection of sounds that works or doesn’t work using the information we’ve learned in class. Sometimes you may be able to identify the exact reasons a passage has certain aural properties, but sometimes you won’t, in which case you should either try to make an educated guess as to what the music is “doing,” or try to make an educated guess on why you perceive the piece a certain way.” Try to use some music vocabulary in this report, like “dynamic”, “Tempo”, “Major key or minor key”

In this assignment you will write an autobiographical essay about your own gender identity. Questions you should consider addressing include: ● What gender were you assigned at birth? Who decided? Based on what information did they make the decision? How did your parents feel about your sex/gender? What expectations did they have of you and your life based on what sex you were assigned at birth? One thing you could do is talk to (in person or over the phone) the people who were there when you were born and ask them about this. ● How do you think your life would have been different if you had been born a different sex/gender? ● What was your gender socialization like during early childhood? When is the first time you became aware of your gender or can remember thinking “I am a boy.” or “I am a girl.” Where were you? How did you find out you were a boy/girl? Why? ● How are you treated because of your gender? What are aspects of this treatment do you like/dislike? ● What choices do you make about your gender? How do you do your gender? What kind of man or woman (or other) are you? What kind of man/woman/other do you want to or try to be? What aspects of your gender are important to you? ● What roles do you play in your life because of what your gender is? ● Whose gender do you admire (this could be someone you know in your life or a famous person or a character — whatever) — why do you admire it? ● How is your gender influenced by other aspects of your identity (e.g. your race, sexuality, age, culture, religion, ethnicity, etc)? Formatting guidelines: 5-10 double-spaced pages 12 pt font, not bold, not italicized, Times New Roman or Arial or Calibri or Garamond. Use headings that break your paper into sections. You have a lot of freedom in how you organize it. You should decide which of the above questions are most interesting to you, what stories you want to tell, in what order, etc. I’d say just start writing and see what happens. After you draft it, read what you have written and then write an introduction telling the reader (me) what’s to come. Be brave. Get creative. Tell stories. Use concepts that we have learned in the course. Tie readings or films into your essay about yourself. I.e. describe parts of this course (or others) that have impacted the way that you think about your own gender identity. This is really an essay about you — but lean on course materials where it is useful or helpful. I encourage you to be vulnerable and personal but obviously don’t disclose anything you’re not willing to share with me.
