Adolescent Physical Development Assignment
This assignment is required for this unit and will count towards your course grade.
Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to enhance your understanding of puberty, associated changes in physical development and sexuality, and related concepts.

Task:

Write an essay (minimum length is 500 words) in which you apply 5 of the following concepts to real-life examples.

First, choose 5 concepts that you have clear memories of from puberty or in which you are especially interested:
puberty
puberty rite
menarche
spermarche
early puberty (“early bloomer”)
late puberty (“late bloomer”)
thin ideal
Anorexia nervosa
Bulimia nervosa
primary sexual characteristics
secondary sexual characteristics
growth spurt
sexually transmitted infection
distorted body image
sexual double standard

Use your textbook or additional resources to define/describe each term. Your descriptions should be *in your own words* and in enough detail that someone unfamiliar with this material could understand your description. Please do not copy or quote from the textbook

Next, for each concept, provide a real-life example. This example can come from personal experience (your own or a friend’s), a news story, an online/social networking site, etc. The example you write about might even be a picture of yourself during adolescence (you can paste it into your document). Make sure to clearly explain why each is an example of the concept and expand on the example to show your understanding. For example, perhaps you’ll mention if this was a typical or atypical example based on what you’ve learned in this class or you might discuss how the experience made you feel. Include any links to other resources.

Hard Times Generation Families living in cars YouTube According to the narrator, Scott Pelley (NBC 60 Minutes, 2011), close to 25% of children in the US (that is 1 out of 4) live in poverty. In the video, Pelley interviews a number of children (and family members) who have experienced homelessness, living on the streets, in cars, and in shelters. As you reflect on the video and on Chapter 1 of the text Behavior Management: Principles And Practices of Positive Behavior Support, consider how various theorists would assess the needs of children living in poverty. Select two of the following theoretical frameworks: Developmental Psychodynamic Ecological Social Learning Discuss how proponents of each framework would analyze two of the children or families in the videos. What would they want educators to know or be aware of as they structure learning environments for each child? What were some sources of strength for the child (children) or the family? How might teachers make use of those sources of strength in creating educational environments that support learning?

In no more than six sentences, explore the connection between your two annotated passages in the following way. Pick two passages from the novel Beloved, Pick one motif or technique shared by both passages and compare and contrast how this technique or motif is used in each. Then imagine what problem or question the novel is trying to think through in these two passages. Your claim should articulate your judgment about what important question or problem is at issue in these passages. You do not have to say how the novel solves this problem or answers this question. In fact, you should not attempt to. Your task is use close analysis of the language of the passages to identify that question with as much nuance and precision as you can. In no more than six sentences, explore the connection between your two annotated passages in the following way. Pick one motif or technique shared by both passages and compare and contrast how this technique or motif is used in each. Hint 1: Perhaps the best way to make a claim about what question the passages are preoccupied with is to use the following template: Through the motif/technique of _____________, these passages pose the question of what/how/why/to what extent/under what conditions __________________. In the blank there should be at least one noun, maybe more, and at least one verb, and the noun should name the crucial topic that the passages are exploring. If you decide not to use this template, you may be avoiding the task in the prompt. Hint 2: Motif should not be confused with topic or theme. Remember that a motif is a concrete image or phrase that is repeated across the novel and that out of which a significant pattern is made. Death or memory are topics; “rememory” or “chokecherry tree” or 124’s “white staircase” or “pieces” or “weight” or “A man ain’t nothin but a man” are motifs. A novel like Beloved says what it has to say about the topics it is concerned with by developing its motifs in the way that it does. Hint 3: Although you do not have to focus on point of view as your technique, you should be mindful of which characters’ thoughts are being reported in the passages you’ve chosen. As we’ve seen, the narrative function within this novel is almost always to report the thoughts of particular characters.

Your task this week is to choose your favorite course concept or term that we’ve covered thus far. You might choose a term that you find particularly interesting, something that you didn’t know before, something that’s a little unique…whatever you want. The only term you cannot choose for this exercise is “globalization.” Anything else is fair game. Once you’ve chosen your term or concept, I’d like you to create a meme that reflects the concept. Include your meme in your post. Then, briefly (in one paragraph) explain your meme. Why did you pick this term, what are you trying to convey in your meme. Be original and creative. You won’t be able to see your classmates posts until you post so duplicate concepts will not be penalized. Your meme and explanation paragraph must be your original work. Term: Free Trade
