Before making this important decision, you’ll want to gather as much information as possible to help make the right choice. Determine the level of trust that you would place in information provided by the following sources: a salesman at the car lot, the dealer’s Website, social media (i.e. Facebook), an associate from work, and a close friend. Discuss the key factors involved in assessing the amount of trust that you put into each source. 2. Imagine you’re able to persuade another person. You sincerely believe that your position is 100% right. Explain whether you would slant information in such a way as to make your point(s) seem more credible. Discuss the primary ethical dilemmas that this scenario could cause for both you and the person whom you are trying to persuade. The Value of Critical Thinking 3. First – Give your opinion on whether being an effective critical thinker makes decision making easier or more challenging. Talk about concrete decisions you had to or will have to make. Justify your response. 4. Second – Consider the following statement: “The major difference between a successful person and one that is not successful is that the successful person, over time, tends to make better decisions than the less successful person.” Discuss whether you believe this statement to be true. Explain the fundamental ways in which effectively applying critical thinking concepts has helped you to become more successful.

Activity 2 entails observing and describing the culture of drag performance. For this activities, you will produce a visual component and a 3-4 page report that consists of your observations written in an ethnographic manner and a brief analysis that draws from relevant assigned readings. The activities are aimed at helping you understand the applications of course content to your own life and the social world around you. More guidelines will be provided in class.

The next step in the process of acquiring information is to move past what we can think of onto what we can see. That is, we have the way things are done and how to do them but we have not yet touched the work. In this case, we begin by reviewing some information regarding a trend towards bipedalism based on an arbitrary scale. That is, we use diagnostic features we can see and judge for ourselves. Although some may believe arbitrary assessments to be vague or assumptive, this step is sometimes used by those who know about the subject. That is we have spent many weeks getting to the point where you are trained observers. That is what you see matters and you will now “show what you can do with what you know.” This quick step is used to give immediate feedback to guide the path of inquiry. For example, an arbitrary scale can give values which can be interpreted as useful or not. The values can also be added to a graph which may show connections, divergence, and trends. Although the arbitrary assessments may be cursory they can be used to help make predictions. The predictions can aid in a direction of inquiry such as future experimental design to pursue a lead or quickly and simply rule out an assumption. An assumption in science can be either a premise for an idea based on experience, or a prediction based on prior data. That is, the premise from an informed previous statement can lead to inquiry. Informed statements come from experience or existing data. Therefore, an assumption in science is very different from how assumptions are used in daily activities by many non-scientists. Here we may assume that the diagnostics features listed in the drawing plantigrade, digitigrade, unguligrade highlight things of interest in relation to patterns of locomotion, in this case distinctions of speed and power compared to bipedalism. Why does Coser believe that conflict is good for society? Discuss a real-life example in which a social conflict followed and lent support to Coser’s theory. Case Study 2 Mr. P is a 76-year-old male with cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure who has been hospitalized frequently to treat CHF symptoms. He has difficulty maintaining diet restrictions and managing his polypharmacy. He has 4+ pitting edema, moist crackles throughout lung fields, and labored breathing. He has no family other than his wife, who verbalizes sadness over his declining health and over her inability to get out of the house. She is overwhelmed with the stack of medical bills, as Mr. P always took care of the financial issues. Mr. P is despondent and asks why God has not taken him.
