Crabwalk was controversial upon its release and many German critics and readers saw the book as breaking German taboos about discussing the nation’s past. Why might some Germans have seen Crabwalk as a challenge to twenty-first century German national identity? Be sure to utilize all relevant sources in your response.

Crabwalk Novel and The German Identity

Understanding the relationship between literature and the past is essential for everyone. This allows him to better appreciate how historical events have influenced the flow of these pieces of art and understand the author’s words in context to the socio-political and historical circumstances that existed during its time of writing. Accordingly, this article would focus on Gunter Grass 2022 novel entitled Crabwalk. Specifically, the succeeding sections would provide a short overview of the novel and a careful analysis of its ‘controversial aspect,’ which relates to the perception and disambiguation of Germany’s past. Nonetheless, I believe that while the Grass’ approach might seem controversial at first hand, recognizing both sides of the story allows us to avoid repeating the same mistakes of the past.

The Plot
The Crabwalk revolves around the story of the sinking of Wilhelm Gustloff, a German military transport ship sunk by the Soviets in 1945. Accordingly, this event set a symbolic foundation throughout the story since Paul Pokreifke, a German journalist and the story’s main narrator, was also born on the same day on board the ship that rescued Tulla, his mother (Grass). Thus, this event has significantly influenced his life and others, as his mother has continuously reminded him of his responsibility to remember such events in writing.
However, while Paul tried his best to avoid commemorating his best, it was later shown that Tulla was able to influence his son, Konrad, into the same. This led to a strange interaction in their website wherein Konrad and Wolfgang (Wolfgang Stremplin) interacted as Gustloff and David Frankfurter, respectively.
Further in the story, Stremplin and Konrad meet in Gustloff’s hometown. After Wolfgang’s act of spitting in Gustloff’s memorial, Konny shot him in the head. After that, Konrad surrendered to the authorities and uttered the words, “I shot because I am a German.” Ultimately, Paul realized that the news about his son being imprisoned has led to his sensationalization and becoming a new martyr in the eyes of neo-nazists.

The German Identity
One of the main reasons why the Crabwalk has served as a challenge to the identity of current-day Germans is because it opens up what some might call a ‘national taboo’ in the discussion of Germany’s past (Buruma). One of the main themes, as could be seen from the plot itself, was the ‘desire’ of the Germans to realize and commemorate the victims of the war, which Grass considered as ‘Taboo’ considering the atrocious acts done by the German (Mars-Jones).

The Victims of the Past

In line with the story, I believe that Tulla served as a representation of this persona. On the one hand, Tulla was a victim of the war since she was a non-combatant and has suffered injuries and emotional trauma as she was aboard the Wilhelm Gustloff. This espoused her desire to seek justice against what happened, even in the form of a “memorialization” of what happened to them (Riding). On the other hand, Tulla’s desire is also considered to be ‘taboo’ by the mere fact that she is a German. This created a ‘repressed desire’ on her part to make her side known that Paul has consistently rejected.

As Covid-19 cases increase, new restrictions have been put in place in Los Angeles County. On Sunday, November 22, it was announced that outdoor dining would no longer be allowed in Los Angeles County for at least three weeks. On Friday the 27th, the day after Thanksgiving, L.A. County announced a new stay-at-home order which prohibits all private and public gatherings which include people from multiple households, except for religious gatherings and political protests, and also puts additional occupancy limits on businesses. From the LA Times: • Officials have warned that even more strict rules — perhaps a more formal stay-at-home order — are likely if L.A. can’t begin to bend the curve on this third wave. • Two months ago, officials estimated that 1 in 880 L.A. County residents were infected with the coronavirus; now, they believe it’s 1 in 145 and climbing, meaning the activities that people once enjoyed safely now pose more risk. • Public health officials on Saturday reported 3,143 new cases of the virus and 19 deaths but said that the numbers were low because no community testing was offered on Thanksgiving, and only limited testing was performed the day after. Nonetheless, officials said, the proportion of tests coming back positive doubled over the last two weeks, reaching 7.4%. • Even though she works outside at a kiosk — just outside Skechers — Anabel Velazquez worries about the health risk. She says people take offense when she reminds them to wear a mask or wear it properly — which is ironic because she sells masks and was herself sporting one with a Playboy logo. From The Guardian: • Restaurants across the state have also invested significant resources in setting up outdoor dining, which has added to the frustration with the shutdown. Guerrilla Tacos spent roughly $27,000 to create an outdoor space and has been selling out reservations, making a slim profit. • Other LA restaurant owners said they were worried this shutdown would force them to permanently close. • Some conservative parts of the state, including Huntington Beach, south of LA, have protested against Newsom’s restrictions, with some urging him to “open California” at a rally after curfew rules went into effect Saturday night. • Newsom recently faced scrutiny after photos emerged of him dining out with other families at French Laundry, one of California’s most expensive and upscale restaurants.

Hi, Please read the instructions for this assignment below. Please let me know which topic would you like to write about. The books we read so far including The Iliad and The Odyssey both by Homer, The Oresteia, Genesis, Job, and Sappho if not, winter. I would personally recommend to write The Iliad or odyssey. I must show proof of attendance to the Museum. You can find pictures online and please let me know which museum in NYC and topic did you pick then I will go there and take a picture of the one you write to show attendance. I would greatly appreciate it! just like the last assignment you did, do not use many big or really complicated words, but the ideas and structure of the essay must be super CLEAR. Thank you Want to ignore historical context and focus on your experience and your own analysis of the cultural piece. You may want to consider your own experience at the museum or theatrical event. And. discuss how this experience reshaped your interpretation or relationship to a text(s) we read this past semester. (Museum: what pieces were around it? Was the piece displayed as part of a theme, historical period, or an artist’s work? How did that shape your interaction with it? Theater: what was the production like? The sets? Costumes? The spectacle?) It is up to you. and there are many other ways you can approach this writing piece. OPTION TWO: For option two. discuss the connection between your creation and a text we read. You might approach this like a book review or artist exhibit review in a newspaper, discussing the major themes you sought to develop. Or. you might reflect on the process of making your work – what choices did you make in crafting your poetry/music/film etc.? Why? What inspired you initially from the original work that led to your creation? How did the process of creating this work make you appreciate a new aspect of the texts we read or the authors who wrote them? Again, it is up to you. and there are many other ways you can approach this writing piece. 1 Core in Contemporary Culture Due: Nov 8th1.1 The Core and Contemporary Culture Assignment: This assignment asks you to be creative and connect the literature we have read this semester to contemporary culture. You must submit 2-3 page writing assignment. 1) One option is that you may select a piece of NYC based western visual art. theater or film and examine them in conjunction with a piece of literature from this semester. These may be found through a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or attendance of a performance (theater, poetiy. dance, etc.) in NYC. Write an analysis examining the piece/pieces you chose to discuss, relating them to the literature we have read, and how the engagement with the pieces you chose makes you think reflect understand the literature we have read this semester. As creativity is a component of the assignment, be selective in picking what you want to write about. 2) Alternatively, you may develop your own creative project (visual art. theater, poetiy. dialogue, letter). In addition to submitting your piece, you must write an analysis explaining how your work interprets and relates to literature we have read. Grading of this assignment will be based to some degree on creativity but mostly on your ability to present a clear, organized piece of writing that demonstrates an engagement with the text. DUE: The written assignments are due 11/9. In addition to submitting your written piece, you must show proof of attendance (photos of tickets or attendance/selected pieces) that may be submitted via email. For those of you going on the Met Tour. be creative in your selection of what work you want to use for your assignment. You may want to pick a piece not discussed on the torn- itself. You are welcome to go to the Met on your own time and pick a piece. **It is not necessary to construct an argument in the way that you do for the analytic essays. However, your essay, should be organized, and an argument or at least a clear introduction explaining the piece that you selected or created and its connection to the text(s) this past semester, may be helpful. I would also encourage you to make the connection between the cultural piece and what you saw obvious. Show engagement both with the text we read this past semester and draw connections between the text and the cultural piece you chose. You should cite or reference the text as needed. OPTION ONE: If you are doing option ONE. you have a variety of options. You may want to consider the historical context in which the cultural piece you selected was created.

Audience and content audit. Audience audit. Reverse Garbage is a not-for-profit organization that creatively converts waste from landfills to items that are sold to the general public at a small fee. The organization accepts industrial discards from more than three hundred companies hence diverting them from landfills. Some of the materials include clothes and textiles, food and drinks packaging, furniture and fittings (Territory & Wales, 2010). The materials can be used by clients as art and craft, making costumes, making jewelry, film arts, theatre, and furniture. The company also offers education, educational tours and learning workshops for learning institutions and the general public (Maack, 2010). The organization was set up in 1974 by a team of teachers that was passionate about reducing the amount of solid waste that got its way into the landfills and promote the reusing of materials in their classroom. For the thirty-six years that the organization has been in operation, it has primarily focused on reducing land pollution, and providing the general public with affordable goods. The company has several revenue streams. It encourages donations of waste from residences, companies and industries to prevent the waste from going to landfills. It sells the reusable and recyclable items to the general public at a low cost and raises funds from running learning workshops, creative reuse sessions, and educating students on environmental conservation (Maack, 2010). The services offered by the company are accessed by customers when they visit the workshop in Marrickville. The wide variety of the goods that are offered by the company are also available in the workshop. Alternatively, the company posts photos of some of the items that they have on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and customers make orders online. The items are then posted to them. The current customers for Reverse Garbage include the lovers of art that stay around Marrickville and the online users that order the products on social media platforms. The number of people that lover art and would make use of the wide range of products are innumerable and scattered throughout the social media platforms. People that advocate for environmental sustainability could also provide a potential market for the products, since buying from Reverse Garbage would contribute greatly to reducing solid waste dumping in landfills. These prospective customers can be reached through popular social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook. The interaction between the company and clients on Twitter is limited. Most of the posts go without likes and retweets. There are almost zero replies on all the posts. On Facebook and Twitter, the company receives a handful of comments with people requesting for if they can donate items and placing orders. The company responds on the same day that the comments are left. Some of the replies, however, are left late on the following day. For most of the replies, the replies are just a direction to an email for a private transaction. Content audit. The most conspicuous items when you visit the Facebook page of Reverse Garbage is the cover page. At the time of this audit, the cover page was a green poster highlighting the hours that the company is open. The profile picture contains the logo of the company. The logo is white and pink themed. The page has a total of 86, 764 likes. Based on the opinion of 478 people, the company has a rating of 4.5 on a scale of one to five. Also conspicuous on the Facebook page is information regarding to the company. The about section gives the geographical location of the company; 8/142 Addison Road, Marrickville, New South Wales 2204. Next to the location, the company provides a link to the directions. It also contains a link to the website of the company, and the twitter handle of the company. One phone number, through which customers can communicate with the organization, is provided. The about section excellently outlines the company overview, the mission of the company, and the products offered by the company. A quick google search of Reverse Garbage directs one to the website of the company and the Facebook page. The company posts at least one post every day. The posts are mainly meant for marketing the items that are offered by the company. The company also shares news about the various projects that the company is involved in. The page contains items the company thinks are most relevant at a given point. For instance, in the face of the widely spreading Covid-19 pandemic, the company is advertising their creatively made and beautiful face masks. The images of the items captured are of a high quality and eye-catching. It is difficult to scroll through the page without stopping to admire the beautiful items. For each of the items, the price of the items is displayed. The company also uses the Facebook page to pass well whishes to the customers during holidays such as Easter and Christmas. The posts on the Facebook page are written in a clear and easy to understand language. They provide a brief description of the products before giving the price of the items. The posts, however, fail to give clear direction to the location where customers can find the items. The posts assume that the client had already gone through the about section of the page and found out the location. While the company provides a link to the online market where the people can shop for the products, most the posts do not direct the online users to the online market. While most of the posts are about self-promotion, the company also posts information that is useful to the followers. The company posts some of videos that guide people on various ways through which they can creatively divert residential waste. It also promotes the safety of the clients by encouraging them to stay at home during the pandemic. References Maack, I., 2010. An irresistible idea. Rattler (Sydney), (96), p. 6. Week 2: Measurement One of the keystone concepts in modern quality improvement science is that of measurement. An often heard management adage is “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” Measurement can come in many different forms, including statistics, charts, and patient satisfaction surveys. This week we begin to explore measurement in health care quality improvement, and we will be introduced to various tools used for measurement. Learning Objectives Students will: Analyze an example of quality that was measured, assessed, and improved Apply simple data collection techniques to a measurement problem Design a data collection mechanism for an aspect of quality Interpret a control chart Synthesize the purpose, methods, and findings from the evidence-based literature that relate to a practice problem Photo Credit: [Anthia Cumming]/[E+]/Getty Images Learning Resources Required Readings Spath, P. Review the eight components of HEDIS comprehensive diabetes care; then consider the following scenario. You are a staff nurse working in a private primary care practice. It is a small practice with 2 MDs (internists), 2 nurses, 1 medical assistant, and an office staff for billing. There are approximately 1,000 patients in the practice. You have had no EHR until the last year, but all charts are manual, historically. Your physicians are starting to inquire about quality incentives, particularly regarding patients with diabetes. By Day 3 Take on the role of the staff nurse in the scenario, and post an explanation of how you would go about finding out how many diabetics are in your practice and how many meet all 8 components of HEDIS comprehensive diabetes care. Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature. Your posts need to be written at the capstone level (see checklist). Notes Initial Post: This should be a 3-paragraph (at least 350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old). (Refer to AWE Checklist, Capstone) By Day 7 Read two or more of your colleagues’ postings from the Discussion question. Respond to two or more of your colleagues’ postings with a critique of their data mechanisms. Explain whether the data mechanism is practical, how long it might take, any alternatives you might suggest, and/or any electronic data collection possibilities that might apply. Post a Discussion entry on three different days of the week. See the Discussion Rubric found in the Course Information area. Country: south africa This assignment asks you to answer three questions: (1) What are the country’s main contributions to GEC (e.g. methane, CO2, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, etc.), and what are their sources (e.g. industry, deforestation, urbanization, etc.)? (2) What are the primary effects of GEC in your assigned country, and who/what is most impacted? (potential and already realized). (3) Taking (1) and (2) above together, what does your analysis tell us about questions of equity and fairness? Please note: In answering this, it is important to keep in mind that the primary effects of GEC on your assigned country are not caused solely by emissions from the country in question – emissions are produced globally, with some countries producing more than others. As you answer this question, be sure to engage with core course concepts. 3-4 pages double spaced 12 pt font.
