Questions about Language

1. Outside of France, French can be the first language of the people of the country (or other geographical entity). In other cases, it is not anyone’s first language but is a strong second language used in education and for official purposes. Comment on the status of French in the area of the world assigned to you.
The study of language is one of the most critical fields in the study of the world. Through this field, units of communication such as grammar, syntax, and vocabulary, among others, can give an idea about the history of the people, the current state of culture and society, as well as provide an insight to what kind of changes can happen in the future.
One example of how language can be used to understand the history and the current state of affairs is in the case of Martinique and Guadeloupe. Both of these Caribbean islands were geographically isolated from France, yet they use French as their official language and Creole as secondary.

It is the primary language that the people speak as well as use in their institutions such as in governance, education, and even when communicating with the world. In fact, what suggests that French is the most influential language in both of these areas is that compared to other French-speaking countries, only a small population of the locals in both Martinique and Guadaloupe speak English.
Historically speaking, the dominance of the language throughout these areas is brought about by the arrival of Columbus back in the mid-1400s. Additionally, the relative isolation of these islands from other countries made it adopt the language as their own. Subsequently, however, the increase in globalization had created a ‘hybrid’ type of language, which is the Creole. Creole is considered as a hybrid language as it is created from a mix of other dominant languages that were localized and adapted to the place itself.

The Critical Reading Response is a written response to assigned readings (typed). These responses will enable you to learn about what you are reading through writing. The Critical Reading Response will be used as a basis for discussion; accordingly, please be prepared to share this work in class. Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson SUMMARY In the first part of your response, summarize ONE of the above readings in 3-4 paragraphs (exception: for Jefferson and Stanton, summarize the reading in 2 paragraphs). See summary tips. Identify and put the author’s main argument and supporting arguments into your own words. Define any key terms that the author uses in the text of your summary. COMPARISON PARAGRAPH(S) Then in an additional paragraph, compare or contrast the reading to another reading on a single point of comparison. To support your response, include a relevant quotation from each reading to support your response. Please use the following format: Begin with a topic sentence that expresses the comparison (mention the 2 readings and the specific similarity or difference between the 2 readings). Quote the passage, properly introducing your quotation and citing the quotation in-text. Paraphrase and then discuss the passage. Quote the passage, properly introducing your quotation and citing the quotation in-text. Paraphrase and then discuss the 2nd passage. Explain the connection between these 2 quotations. If your paragraph gets long, consider splitting the discussion into 2 paragraphs where you shift to a discussion of the 2nd reading. Include a complete Works Cited entry in MLA format (choose the “Work in an Anthology” or page on a website model; see the Directory of Works Cited models in your Writer’s Reference handbook or the PCC MLA 8 Quick Guide Links to an external site. ). For example, we have reviewed a bit about the changes in the skeletons of humans and other species. In those things we have noted skeletons have changed in a sequence overtime in that;● Human types have special adaptations which allow and require a two legged walk, aka facultative bipedalism.● There are isolation forces, geographic isolation, which can produce changes in animal types based on the ecosystem. For example,Foster’s Rule.● That variation of species is measurable as noted by Darwin’s Finches. Here in this section, there is a short lesson which gets the student acquainted with the process of biological classification. This is a small and simple lesson to give the idea of distinct traits, and mosaic species. This process can start with some basic assumptions, scientific ones, that things potentially get more complex as they change. It is important to note that a species can become simpler to survive but it also noted that some things become more complex. That being said we will start with the assumption that; things potentially get more complex as they change. Simpler is then older and more complex is newer. Note in following species, Andersenii aquaticus, is about first, the identification of the simply described simplest form of the organism, noted by the membranes (borders) and nothing else distinctive (Table1, Key concept 1.) This lesson assesses Mendel’s first law of: segregation. That is that offspring inherit their traits from parents. Therefore, related species had to get their traits from ones that existed before. It assesses evolutionary theory in showing that organisms tend towards complexity but at time entropy happens and things leave the family line. It shows the theory of phylogenetics ( gene types) and shows the relation in arbitrary time on the cladogram.

It is a well-known fact that people need to exercise to prevent being afflicted with diseases, especially those that are caused by unhealthy lifestyle. However, keeping an exercise routine for a college student is easily said than done. On the one hand, this is due to the number of academic requirements that we have to do every day. On the other hand, this is also due to the social life and other extra-curricular activities that consume most of our idle time. In other words, while exercising is noted in the calendars of most college students, this usually gets relegated when there is any spare time after everything else. However, what I realized lately was that exercising need not be done and scheduled as a whole day activity per week. Instead, I saw some videos saying that by doing small but continuous physical efforts every day (e.g., walking to school instead of riding the bus) one can experience the benefits of a one-time-per-week routine that others are doing. About this, I also realized that this kind of method could also be done in other aspects of life such as dieting by changing parts of what you eat little by little and not in one fell sweep. In fact, for four weeks now I make sure to walk going to school and other places and reduce the number of calories that I eat by changing portions of my meals to fruits. While the results might not be that good as having a strenuous workout routine, I believe that this is doing me well given that I have a very tight schedule. All in all, I think that by doing things little by little, I could then convince myself to increase the strenuousness of my activities little by little.

In no more than six sentences, explore the connection between your two annotated passages in the following way. Pick two passages from the novel Beloved, Pick one motif or technique shared by both passages and compare and contrast how this technique or motif is used in each. Then imagine what problem or question the novel is trying to think through in these two passages. Your claim should articulate your judgment about what important question or problem is at issue in these passages. You do not have to say how the novel solves this problem or answers this question. In fact, you should not attempt to. Your task is use close analysis of the language of the passages to identify that question with as much nuance and precision as you can. In no more than six sentences, explore the connection between your two annotated passages in the following way. Pick one motif or technique shared by both passages and compare and contrast how this technique or motif is used in each. Then imagine what problem or question the novel is trying to think through in these two passages. In fact, you should not attempt to. Your task is use close analysis of the language of the passages to identify that question with as much nuance and precision as you can. Hint 1: Perhaps the best way to make a claim about what question the passages are preoccupied with is to use the following template: Through the motif/technique of _____________, these passages pose the question of what/how/why/to what extent/under what conditions __________________. In the blank there should be at least one noun, maybe more, and at least one verb, and the noun should name the crucial topic that the passages are exploring. If you decide not to use this template, you may be avoiding the task in the prompt. Hint 2: Motif should not be confused with topic or theme. Remember that a motif is a concrete image or phrase that is repeated across the novel and that out of which a significant pattern is made. Death or memory are topics; “rememory” or “chokecherry tree” or 124’s “white staircase” or “pieces” or “weight” or “A man ain’t nothin but a man” are motifs. A novel like Beloved says what it has to say about the topics it is concerned with by developing its motifs in the way that it does. Hint 3: Although you do not have to focus on point of view as your technique, you should be mindful of which characters’ thoughts are being reported in the passages you’ve chosen. As we’ve seen, the narrative function within this novel is almost always to report the thoughts of particular characters.

Overview There are many types of auctions, each with strengths and weaknesses at uncovering the real price or value of an item. Auctions are widely used in finance, e-commerce, and e-games. They are also widely used to generate revenue for not-for-profit organizations. The following video describes auctions as price discovery mechanisms: The Ideal Auction(https://www(dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=4kWuxfVbIaU) Use the video on auctions and at least three academic or high-quality business publications (see acceptable types below) to compare and contrast English auctions and Dutch auctions, and sealed-bid first-price auctions and Vickery auctions. Assignment 1: Entering the Conversation (15%) Mary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone” Your Task: Throughout your academic and professional career you will be asked to summarize and respond to materials you engage with in order to “join the conversation.” Your first assignment of the semester asks you to look at Mary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone” and join the conversation. For this essay, you should: Provide a brief summary of Pratt’s argument. Join the conversation by either agreeing or disagreeing with her argument. Support your position by drawing on personal experiences or observations. Audience: Your audience for this assignment will be your instructor and your classmates, but you should pretend as though no one reading your essay has ever read Pratt’s article. Thus, you should thoroughly represent the text’s main ideas and key points and provide accurate textual evidence throughout. Requirements: To achieve your purpose with your audience, use the following strategies in your essay: Introduce the text and the author at the beginning.. You must select an argument (claim) that Pratt makes, an argument that touches on an issue that you have ideas of your own to advance. You must present this aspect of Pratt’s argument only, and then you must demonstrate to the reader your own argument on the issue(s) it raises. In your rough draft, you need to briefly summarize Pratt’s point via a quotation, and then advance your own argument on the issue that has been raised. It is always good to signal your reader and use reporting verbs such as “Pratt argues/claims/states,” “According to Pratt,” and “for Pratt, the solution appears to be,” etc. Anytime you are summarizing, paraphrasing, or quoting from the article you should note it at the end of the sentence via an in-text citation, as following: (Pratt 537). Formatting guidelines: at least 900 words (all drafts must be at least 900 words in order to get credit – this is equivalent to at least three full pages. Drafts exceeding four pages will lose points for lack of concision), Times New Roman, 12 font, standard margins, double spaced, using MLA format Top right corner of all pages: Your last name and page number Top left corner (1st page only): Your name, professor’s name, Class title, date submitted, who helped you with the essay, if anyone (LRC tutors, name of a Penn State faculty member) Title (1st page only): Double space again and center the title. Do not underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks; write the title in Title Case (standard capitalization), not in all capital letters (Come up with a unique title that reflects your particular essay). Works cited page: The last page of your essay should be a works cited page, which lists the reference for Pratt’s essay. Copy and paste the following reference into your works cited page: Pratt, Mary Louise. “Arts of the contact zone.” Ways of Reading: An Anthology for Writers, edited by David Bartholomae and Anthony Petrosky, Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2002, pp. 604-623.

The purpose of this assignment is to analyze and review company report specifications. You will apply what you have learned in past principles of practice by completing one of the following options. The instructor will assign you a scenario that includes a corporation’s pertinent financial information. Using your corporation’s information and what you have learned in this course, develop a memo to your client, using the outline presented. The memo should be 500-750 words and must include the following information: 1. Explanation of the taxpayer’s business and issue at hand (heading: Facts). 2. Explanation of the IRS rules regarding the matter (also part of Facts). 3. Tax laws and applicable court cases to support the deductions, where applicable (heading: Analysis). 4. Conclusion as to the recommendations to the company (heading: Conclusion). The organization of the memo should present the headings in the following order: Facts, Conclusion, Analysis. The response should be formatted as a professional business memo to the client. Please save your assignment as a Word document with the filename: LastnameFirstInitial.ACC460.M.docx, where the M refers to Memo. Option 1 Problem: Adapted from I.11-66 in the textbook. Sonny Corporation has never been audited before the current year. An audit is now needed by a CPA because the company is expanding rapidly and plans to issue stock to the public. A CPA firm has been doing preliminary evaluations of the Sonny Corporation’s accounts and records. One major problem involves the valuation of inventory under GAAP. Sonny Corporation has been valuing its inventory under the cost method and no write-downs have been made for obsolescence. A review of the inventory indicates that obsolescence and excess spare parts in the inventory are two major violations of Accounting Periods and Methods. The CPA states that for GAAP the company will be required to write down its inventory by 25% of its stated amount, or $100,000, and charge this amount against net income from operations for the current period. Otherwise, an unqualified (i.e., a “clean opinion”) will not be rendered. The company controller asks your advice regarding the tax consequences from the obsolescence and spare parts inventory write-downs for the current year and the procedures for changing to the lower-of-cost-or-market (LCM) method for tax purposes. Sonny Corporation uses a calendar year for both book and tax purposes, and the date of your contact with the company is December 1 of the current year.
