This assignment asks you to answer three questions:
(1) What are the country’s main contributions to GEC (e.g. methane, CO2, biodiversity
loss, soil erosion, etc.), and what are their sources (e.g. industry, deforestation, urbanization, etc.)?
(2) What are the primary effects of GEC in your assigned country, and who/what is most impacted? (potential and already realized).
(3) Taking (1) and (2) above together, what does your analysis tell us about questions of equity and fairness?
Please note: In answering this, it is important to keep in mind that the primary effects of GEC on your assigned country are not caused solely by emissions from the country in question – emissions are produced globally, with some countries producing more than others.
As you answer this question, be sure to engage with core course concepts.

Introduction
Climate change has been one of the most pervasive threats that humankind has faced in the past century. The sheer amount and scope of its effects are felt all around the world, that almost every nation have dedicated intensive resources in order to mitigate its imminent effects. Yet, the issue is still far from being resolved. The established practices of mankind from their daily lives, to agriculture, and specially that in its manufacturing capacities have all been dependent to the use of materials that are detrimental towards the ecosystem, making it difficult to achieve the change needed to solve this global problem. However, it is a common misconception that climate change and its effects are only rooted upon the physical aspects of man’s practices. Rather, it must be noted that both the issue and its effects are rooted in the social, political, and economic aspects of man’s daily lives. To demonstrate these, both the physical and socio-political issues about Global Environmental Change (GEC) in South Africa would be discussed in greater detail. On the one hand, the succeeding chapter would initially show South Africa’s main contribution towards GEC as well as its sources. On the other hand, the article would also show the socio-political aspects affecting and resulting such contributions. All in all, the author believes that although climate change is a phenomenon brought about by the collective actions of every nation in the world, with the richest having the greatest contribution, its effects have been mostly pervasive amongst poorer countries in the world.
Contributions to Global Environmental Change
South Africa is a nation located in the southern tip of the continent of Africa. Although its neighbors such as Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, among others, are poor nations, South Africa enjoys an advanced economy among the region. In fact, the country is considered as an upper-middle-income country of the World Bank and is the second most industrialized country in the whole region (CCSU.edu, n.d.). However, South Africa’s relatively bigger economy causes a greater effect on GEC, than its neighbors in the same region. As according to CDKN (n.d.), the “IPCC recognizes that Africa (excluding South Africa) has low levels of emissions”. The exclusion provided shows that the country has significantly more emissions as compared to other countries in the same region. In a study conducted by the USAid.gov (2016), it was shown that the main sources for South Africa’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions includes the energy, agriculture, industrial processes, waste, and land-use change and forestry sectors. However, the energy sector accounts for 84% of the country’s overall GHG emissions, while agriculture only comes second, accounting for only 7% of the total GHG emissions. In terms of CO2 emissions, recent reports showed that 15% of emissions of the country are generated by quarrying.

Problem: Adapted from I.11-66 in the textbook.
Sonny Corporation has never been audited before the current year. An audit is now needed by a CPA because the company is expanding rapidly and plans to issue stock to the public. A CPA firm has been doing preliminary evaluations of the Sonny Corporation’s accounts and records. One major problem involves the valuation of inventory under GAAP. Sonny Corporation has been valuing its inventory under the cost method and no write-downs have been made for obsolescence. A review of the inventory indicates that obsolescence and excess spare parts in the inventory are two major violations of Accounting Periods and Methods. The CPA states that for GAAP the company will be required to write down its inventory by 25% of its stated amount, or $100,000, and charge this amount against net income from operations for the current period. Otherwise, an unqualified (i.e., a “clean opinion”) will not be rendered. The company controller asks your advice regarding the tax consequences from the obsolescence and spare parts inventory write-downs for the current year and the procedures for changing to the lower-of-cost-or-market (LCM) method for tax purposes. Sonny Corporation uses a calendar year for both book and tax purposes, and the date of your contact with the company is December 1 of the current year.

Immanuel Kant dares you to show what you know about early modern Europe. He asks that you focus solely on the materials from this course. Kant freaks out when he reads things taken from random websites or other material not assigned in the course. The idea is to think about what we did specifically in this class. (For example, ONLY FROM TEXTBOOK LIKE THE EUROPEAN WORLD, LIVES UNCOVERED, http://www.humanrights.com/what-are-human-rights.html, http://chnm.gmu.edu/revolution/etc),
Kant politely asks that you write at least 550 to 750 words (2+ to 3 pages, typed and double-spaced) on one of the topics below (a little more is fine too). This is a thought essay but do try to have a clear thesis and provide some examples or evidence from course texts where appropriate.
1. Did life for the “average” person change in fundamental ways between 1400 and 1800? If you took the average man or woman, say a farmer/peasant, craftsperson, small-time merchant, or their wife, and compared their lives in 1400 and in 1800 how much do you think their lives had changed? What aspects of life changed the most, and what changed the least? You can think in terms of their everyday lives, their work, their leisure, their homes, their education, occupational opportunities and the like. How might they view things like religion, politics or medicine? Was the average person’s life fundamentally the same or different in important and essential ways?
You can focus on a single “type” or look at more than one but focus has advantages. Be clear about gender, status and profession as you think about this—as well as where the person lived. You can make comparisons to others whose lives might have changed more or less (in the same time period).
2. What was not modern about early modern Europe? Some scholars view the period from roughly 1400 to 1800 as marking the beginning of modernity, hence the period is called early modern. Others believe it is more useful to think of the period as an extension of earlier history, and that industrialization marks the real break toward modernity. The period did witness many changes but these do not necessarily mark out a linear movement toward modernity. So write about the ways the period was not modern.
3. By 1800 Europe had emerged “as the major driving force behind global developments.” (Kümin, 2nd ed, p 362) In what specific ways was Europe a driving force in the world by 1800? How had Europe come to play this role? What were the limitations of European influence? Be sure to include that last point and be careful to look at expansion only up to 1800 and not include the extensive colonization of the nineteenth century in your answer. 3 pages / approx 825 words | APA | Essay | History | Undergraduate |
Instructions: In no more than six sentences, explore the connection between your two annotated passages in the following way.
Pick two passages from the novel Beloved, Pick one motif or technique shared by both passages and compare and contrast how this technique or motif is used in each. Then imagine what problem or question the novel is trying to think through in these two passages. Your claim should articulate your judgment about what important question or problem is at issue in these passages. You do not have to say how the novel solves this problem or answers this question. In fact, you should not attempt to. Your task is use close analysis of the language of the passages to identify that question with as much nuance and precision as you can.

In fact, you should not attempt to. Your task is use close analysis of the language of the passages to identify that question with as much nuance and precision as you can.
Hint 1: Perhaps the best way to make a claim about what question the passages are preoccupied with is to use the following template:
Through the motif/technique of _____________, these passages pose the question of what/how/why/to what extent/under what conditions __________________.
In the blank there should be at least one noun, maybe more, and at least one verb, and the noun should name the crucial topic that the passages are exploring. If you decide not to use this template, you may be avoiding the task in the prompt.
Hint 2: Motif should not be confused with topic or theme. Remember that a motif is a concrete image or phrase that is repeated across the novel and that out of which a significant pattern is made. Death or memory are topics; “rememory” or “chokecherry tree” or 124’s “white staircase” or “pieces” or “weight” or “A man ain’t nothin but a man” are motifs. A novel like Beloved says what it has to say about the topics it is concerned with by developing its motifs in the way that it does.
Hint 3: Although you do not have to focus on point of view as your technique, you should be mindful of which characters’ thoughts are being reported in the passages you’ve chosen. As we’ve seen, the narrative function within this novel is almost always to report the thoughts of particular characters. 1 page / approx 275 words | APA | English (US) 🇺🇸 | Essay | Literature & Language | Undergraduate |
