Assignment 1: Entering the Conversation (15%)
Mary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone”
Your Task:
Throughout your academic and professional career you will be asked to summarize and respond to materials you engage with in order to “join the conversation.” Your first assignment of the semester asks you to look at Mary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone” and join the conversation.
For this essay, you should:
Provide a brief summary of Pratt’s argument.
Join the conversation by either agreeing or disagreeing with her argument. Support your position by drawing on personal experiences or observations.
Audience:
Your audience for this assignment will be your instructor and your classmates, but you should pretend as though no one reading your essay has ever read Pratt’s article. Thus, you should thoroughly represent the text’s main ideas and key points and provide accurate textual evidence throughout.
Requirements:
To achieve your purpose with your audience, use the following strategies in your essay:
Introduce the text and the author at the beginning..
You must select an argument (claim) that Pratt makes, an argument that touches on an issue that you have ideas of your own to advance.
You must present this aspect of Pratt’s argument only, and then you must demonstrate to the reader your own argument on the issue(s) it raises.
In your rough draft, you need to briefly summarize Pratt’s point via a quotation, and then advance your own argument on the issue that has been raised.
It is always good to signal your reader and use reporting verbs such as “Pratt argues/claims/states,” “According to Pratt,” and “for Pratt, the solution appears to be,” etc.
Anytime you are summarizing, paraphrasing, or quoting from the article you should note it at the end of the sentence via an in-text citation, as following: (Pratt 537).
Formatting guidelines: at least 900 words (all drafts must be at least 900 words in order to get credit – this is equivalent to at least three full pages. Drafts exceeding four pages will lose points for lack of concision), Times New Roman, 12 font, standard margins, double spaced, using MLA format
Top right corner of all pages: Your last name and page number
Top left corner (1st page only): Your name, professor’s name, Class title, date submitted, who helped you
with the essay, if anyone (LRC tutors, name of a Penn State faculty member)
Title (1st page only): Double space again and center the title. Do not underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks; write the title in Title Case (standard capitalization), not in all capital letters (Come up with a unique title that reflects your particular essay).
Works cited page: The last page of your essay should be a works cited page, which lists the reference for Pratt’s essay. Copy and paste the following reference into your works cited page:

Summary – Arts of the Contact Zone
It is often said that culture reflects a person’s personality. It acts like a certain guide that influences how a person would perceive, think, and act on the same factual circumstances. However, culture can exist in many ways and not only as a collectivity of the traditions, beliefs, and ideals in the society. It can be further sub-differentiated between ages, ethnicities, and gender, and even professions, among others. Accordingly, Mary Louise Pratt, in her article entitled “Arts of the Contact Zone”, aptly argued and explained that it is the exposure to all these kinds of “sub-cultures” that shapes the individual that we are today and will be in the future. Thus, she states that it is important for anyone to study these ‘contact zones’ when trying to learn about a culture rather than view them as distinct and different entities. In order to further understand her arguments, this article would summarize her contentions and provide a feedback based on my own knowledge and experience. All in all, I believe that understanding Pratt’s concept of ‘contact zones’ would allow individuals to be fully appreciate how different cultures have affected and shaped the one that we have today.
The Contact Zone
Mary Pratt defined her concept of the contact zone as “a social location in which several discourse communities mingle” and exist “in dynamic relations with each other, struggling for power in ways that mirror larger social struggles for political power and justice” (Pratt 10). In other words, she described these zones as areas where both interaction and conflict exist between different cultures, regardless of whether it is manifest on subtle in character. In the succeeding discussions she described what these zones are and exemplified (i.e., Spain and its colonizers) how they affect one another.
Further in her discussion, Pratt also talked about the different ‘actions’ of the contact zone, such as (1) transculturation and (2) collaboration, among others.
On the one hand, transculturation happens when “members of subordinated or marginal groups select and invent from materials transmitted by a dominant or metropolitan culture” (Pratt 28). This is the process where inferior culture (and members of which) accepts the intrusion of a foreign one and uses some of these traditions or ideologies as building blocks for their own. On the other hand, Pratt also discussed about the action of “collaboration”. She defined this concept as the representation of mixed ideas and values from both dominant and inferior cultures that exist within the contact zone.

Instructions: 1. Why do you think Alexie in Absolutely True Diary and Baldwin in “Sonny’s Blues” decided to tell their stories partly through artforms other than words? We see many of Junior’s drawings, and in several styles, and Baldwin uses contrasting musical styles as a key motif in “Sonny’s Blues.” Write one or two paragraphs on each work (do not compare and contrast.) For background on Alexie, read the interview with illustrator Ellen Forney at the back of ‘Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.” Why does the book use contrasting styles and how does it tie in with writing styles/moods from chapter to chapter?
For Baldwin, listen to and learn about the radical change from traditional jazz (like Louis Armstrong), to modern Bebop (‘Bird’/Charlie Parker). Do some web research before you write. Why did many middle-class, religious, and older blacks attack and dislike Bebop? Who in ‘Sonny’s Blues’ is aligned with each? Why do you think Baldwin uses contrasting jazz styles and gospel music to tell this particular story about an African American artist and his family?
2. Select one key character in Go Tell It on the Mountain who is not given a separate chapter (ie, not John, Gabriel, Florence, Elizabeth). What part does he or she play in the intertwined stories of racist violence, prayers, visions, sin, and redemption?

Instructions: Respiration at Rest versus Exercising
This is a Hands-On Labs experiment that explores the differences in respiration at rest and during exercise. Before you start, watch the following videos to become more familiar with the lungs. The first video is narrated using basic terminology, so it is easier for the viewer to understand. The second video is more extensive, showing more structures of the lungs, including the diaphragm. This video also shows the placement of the liver and reviews the structures of the heart.
Video 1: What’s inside the lungs? Lung Dissection At-Bristol Science Centre (4:30)
Video 2: Heart & Lung Dissection (11:52)
Procedure
Follow the procedures detailed in the Respiratory Physiology experiment from Hands-On labs. During the lab, you will breathe into a balloon while you are resting to record how much air is in a single exhalation at rest. You will then exercise for a bit and assess how much air you exhale when you are active. Be sure to follow the instructions in the lab to complete the experiment. Record your data and calculate your tidal volume, minute ventilation, forced vital capacity, and total lung volume. When you are done, write a report or create a presentation. You do not need to submit the Lab Report Assistant for grading.
Create a Report
Use the following outline to describe the data from your lab in a report. Label each portion of the lab as described below.
Introduction: Start with a broad discussion of the lungs, and then narrow your focus to the question(s) that you are trying to answer. Include any observations or background information about the lungs that may pertain to the lab. Conclude the introduction with a hypothesis—a statement that reflects what you believe the outcome of this lab will be. What are you comparing and what do you expect will happen?
Material List: Identify all items that you used and the exact quantities, as applicable. This may be a very short section.
Methods: Describe how you conducted the experiment, including any safety precautions you took while performing the lab. Be sure to include any changes that you made to the original instructions. Did you use different exercises? This should be a short, paraphrased version of the methods from the lab. Do not copy from the lab; Turnitin will highlight it as plagiarism.
Results/Data: Create a table or a figure that reflects/compares the results of your experiment.
Discussion: Review your results and determine if your experiment supports or refutes your hypothesis. Explain why. Then expand your discussion to address why and how your body creates the changes you observed as you increased your level of activity. Be specific and give details. What impact would changes to your lifestyle, such as increasing or decreasing your regular level of activity, have on the values you calculated?
Conclusion: End with a section describing something that intrigued you about the lab; identify errors that may have impacted your results, or note errors in the lab itself; and provide recommendations for future labs.
Requirements:
If you are doing the report, it should be 4-5 pages long, not including the title page.
Reference at least two journal articles.
Include a title page, or title slide for the presentation, and references at the end.
Follow the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA. 4 pages / approx 1100 words | APA | Biological & Biomedical Sciences | Coursework | Undergraduate |
Instructions: Assignment Guidelines:
Select one artist covered in the lecture and one of their artworks to critique.
Title the essay in a way that provides anticipation for the content of the essay.
In the introductory paragraph of your essay, introduce the artist and artwork providing background information for each.
For example: What is the artist’s name? What is their nationality? Where do they live? What type of work do they make? What artwork are you going to cover? What is its title? What materials is it made out of? When was it made? How is the piece experienced?
At the end of the introductory paragraph, provide your thesis. This is your critique of the artwork.
There are many judgements you may have for the work of art you are writing about and it is up to you to develop those into your critique. If you are struggling to develop your critique, start with considering the effectiveness or impact of the artwork. Does the artwork change the way you think about something? Does it not? Does it make you think differently about some ideas, but not others? Does the work operate only on sensationalism or shock value? Is the work well-researched and nuanced providing many interpretations by many different people?
In the following paragraphs, describe the artwork at length and provide your arguments that support and flesh out your critique of the artwork. In these paragraphs, you are answering WHY you critique the artwork in this way.
In your concluding paragraph, relay your thesis (that is not just re-stating it) that summarizes your perceived impact of the work of art.
Think about the artwork’s personal impact upon you, the cultural impact of the artwork, the historical impact, and/or the political impact of the artwork.
7. Embed an image of the work you discussed within your essay. Add an appropriate citation to your Works Cited page.

At this point, you have selected a product or service to write about and have analyzed market opportunities. This week your challenge will be to focus in on the target market. To be effective, a target market needs to be identifiable (you must know who and where they are in detail), persuadable (you have to convince them to part with their hard-earned money for your product or service), able to pay (goes without saying), and substantial, that is, big enough so that they produce enough sales to meet your top line projections. ( I PICKED BEAT BY DRE SPEAKER)
The relevant chapter to guide you is Chapter 7. In part one of the assignment you need to consider each of the following topics, and then address those that apply to your target. Topics that are relevant to every product and service are marked with dollar sign, which I think to be an appropriate indicator.
