Instructions: Here are two situations that working journalists might face. Choose one and discuss what is involved in a way that demonstrates your knowledge of media law and ethics (5 PTS each)
A. You are a political reporter. A candidate for the State Senate had a nervous breakdown ten years ago. The candidate’s opponent has slipped you a notarized hospital document confirming this fact. In an essay that demonstrates your journalism knowledge, discuss whether or not you should print the story and the legal and ethical reasons why. Include the factors involved, the risks if you don’t print it, and the risks if you do print it.
B. Your friend is the lead singer of a rock group. Despite your objections, your editor insists that you review their performance tonight. But at the show, your friend is drunk; it’s obvious to everyone and it’s a terrible show. If you write an honest review, you could ruin his reputation. He asks you to come back the next night, when he promises to stay sober and do a great show. Explain what you would do and the legal and ethical factors that would influence your decision—why you should go, why you shouldn’t go, what you would ultimately write, and what the consequences could be. 1 page / approx 275 words | APA | Communications & Media | Undergraduate |

Instructions: Essay #4: Comedy, the first person, & empathy
English 110
Background: In this unit, we’ll watch two comedy specials that function as monologues and soliloquys: Hannah Gadsby’s “Nanette” and Hasan Minhaj’s “Homecoming King.” Both of these pieces are like first-person essays, or like memoir, combined with an artistic, deliberate visual performance. These comics use their comedy as a way to discuss difficult issues, like homophobia, sexual assault, racism, and class. We’ll also read critical essays on first-person writing itself, and consider how these theories can help us understand these comics’ messages.
Every choice the comic makes—what words they choose, their punchlines and repetition, their eye contact, their movement, their gestures—are all a part of their message. The way they tell their story is as important as the story itself. Their first-person narrative and performance help us, the audience, feel empathy for the speaker in different ways, and help us accept difficult issues that we might not accept otherwise.
Learning Goals: Your goal for this essay is to expand your knowledge of close reading of literary elements (essay #1), analysis of broader themes and structures (essay #2), integrating a real-world lens (essay #3), and combine all of these skills into one coherent, analytical argument.
The task:
Choose one of the comedians from this unit, and then write a 1,500-word essay answering the following questions:

Instructions: Respiration at Rest versus Exercising
This is a Hands-On Labs experiment that explores the differences in respiration at rest and during exercise. Before you start, watch the following videos to become more familiar with the lungs. The first video is narrated using basic terminology, so it is easier for the viewer to understand. The second video is more extensive, showing more structures of the lungs, including the diaphragm. This video also shows the placement of the liver and reviews the structures of the heart.
Video 1: What’s inside the lungs? Lung Dissection At-Bristol Science Centre (4:30)
Video 2: Heart & Lung Dissection (11:52)
Procedure
Follow the procedures detailed in the Respiratory Physiology experiment from Hands-On labs. During the lab, you will breathe into a balloon while you are resting to record how much air is in a single exhalation at rest. You will then exercise for a bit and assess how much air you exhale when you are active. Be sure to follow the instructions in the lab to complete the experiment. Record your data and calculate your tidal volume, minute ventilation, forced vital capacity, and total lung volume. When you are done, write a report or create a presentation. You do not need to submit the Lab Report Assistant for grading.
Create a Report
Use the following outline to describe the data from your lab in a report. Label each portion of the lab as described below.
Introduction: Start with a broad discussion of the lungs, and then narrow your focus to the question(s) that you are trying to answer. Include any observations or background information about the lungs that may pertain to the lab. Conclude the introduction with a hypothesis—a statement that reflects what you believe the outcome of this lab will be. What are you comparing and what do you expect will happen?
Material List: Identify all items that you used and the exact quantities, as applicable. This may be a very short section.
Methods: Describe how you conducted the experiment, including any safety precautions you took while performing the lab. Be sure to include any changes that you made to the original instructions. Did you use different exercises? This should be a short, paraphrased version of the methods from the lab. Do not copy from the lab; Turnitin will highlight it as plagiarism.
Results/Data: Create a table or a figure that reflects/compares the results of your experiment.
Discussion: Review your results and determine if your experiment supports or refutes your hypothesis. Explain why. Then expand your discussion to address why and how your body creates the changes you observed as you increased your level of activity. Be specific and give details. What impact would changes to your lifestyle, such as increasing or decreasing your regular level of activity, have on the values you calculated?
Conclusion: End with a section describing something that intrigued you about the lab; identify errors that may have impacted your results, or note errors in the lab itself; and provide recommendations for future labs.
Requirements:
If you are doing the report, it should be 4-5 pages long, not including the title page.
Reference at least two journal articles.
Include a title page, or title slide for the presentation, and references at the end.

Instructions: As Covid-19 cases increase, new restrictions have been put in place in Los Angeles County. On Sunday, November 22, it was announced that outdoor dining would no longer be allowed in Los Angeles County for at least three weeks. On Friday the 27th, the day after Thanksgiving, L.A. County announced a new stay-at-home order which prohibits all private and public gatherings which include people from multiple households, except for religious gatherings and political protests, and also puts additional occupancy limits on businesses.
From the LA Times:
• Officials have warned that even more strict rules — perhaps a more formal stay-at-home order — are likely if L.A. can’t begin to bend the curve on this third wave.
• Two months ago, officials estimated that 1 in 880 L.A. County residents were infected with the coronavirus; now, they believe it’s 1 in 145 and climbing, meaning the activities that people once enjoyed safely now pose more risk.
• Public health officials on Saturday reported 3,143 new cases of the virus and 19 deaths but said that the numbers were low because no community testing was offered on Thanksgiving, and only limited testing was performed the day after. Nonetheless, officials said, the proportion of tests coming back positive doubled over the last two weeks, reaching 7.4%.
• Even though she works outside at a kiosk — just outside Skechers — Anabel Velazquez worries about the health risk. She says people take offense when she reminds them to wear a mask or wear it properly — which is ironic because she sells masks and was herself sporting one with a Playboy logo.
From The Guardian:
• Restaurants across the state have also invested significant resources in setting up outdoor dining, which has added to the frustration with the shutdown. Guerrilla Tacos spent roughly $27,000 to create an outdoor space and has been selling out reservations, making a slim profit.
• Other LA restaurant owners said they were worried this shutdown would force them to permanently close.
• Some conservative parts of the state, including Huntington Beach, south of LA, have protested against Newsom’s restrictions, with some urging him to “open California” at a rally after curfew rules went into effect Saturday night.
• Newsom recently faced scrutiny after photos emerged of him dining out with other families at French Laundry, one of California’s most expensive and upscale restaurants. 2 pages / approx 550 words | APA | English (US) 🇺🇸 | Essay | Literature & Language | Undergraduate |

Instructions: * Using the preliminary work done in your research journals, write a project proposal for your TA’s and lecturer’s approval. Your proposal must contain the sections below, with headings to label each one. While your audience is your instructors who are familiar with the course, you should still be sure to thoroughly and clearly explain your research process and project.
*
* Introduction of Research Question + Audience Analysis (aim for roughly 300 words): Open this section with a revised version of the research question you submitted in Week 4. Devote the rest of this section to explaining why this question is significant, by answering the following questions:
* How will this research question help you address an issue that needs to be considered, especially as society rebuilds post-pandemic? How will this question help you come up with a particular action/solution/intervention to take with your peers to address this issue when we all return to campus?
* How will this research question help you get the information you’ll need to pose an effective call to action to your peers? In other words, how will answering this research question help you get your peers to join you? What common knowledge, values, or ideological frameworks will it help you establish with your peers?
*
* Research Plan (aim for roughly 300 words): This section will explain your plan for answering your research question.
* Identify what you don’t know yet. Answer these questions: What are the gaps in your knowledge, and how will you fill those gaps? Which of the following will you do to fill those gaps: more library research, experimentation, participatory observation at a synchronous UCSD source, or some other research activities?
* Propose a detailed timeline for yourself for the last five weeks of the quarter so that you can complete the research project by its due date. What will you complete, and by when? You must note in this timeline what synchronous UCSD source you are planning to attend before the week 8 deadline to submit your annotated bibliographic entry for this specific source.
*
*
* Annotated Bibliography (aim for roughly 500 words): For the last section of your proposal, include two annotated bibliographic entries (about 250 words per source), in APA format, to show the research you have done thus far. One entry should be for any DOC course text (assigned or suggested from any quarter) that helps you answer your research question. The remaining entry should be for an outside source you have found through library database searches. Remember to consult our library guide on how to structure annotated bibliographic entries (https://ucsd(dot)libguides(dot)com/DOC3/annotatedbib). Each annotation should include a critical summary of the source’s argument (in your own words), an evaluation of the usefulness of the source in helping you answer your research question, and a description of how you plan to utilize the source in your final research project.
* NOTE ON SOURCE USE IN THE PROPOSAL: You may reference sources in your project proposal that are not included in your annotated bibliography as long as you fully utilize APA citation requirements and list the sources on a separate References page at the end of your proposal. 3 pages / approx 825 words | APA | English (US) 🇺🇸 | Essay | Literature & Language | Undergraduate |
