March 21, 2021
Located near the equator, Malaysia has a rich culture and an abundant source of mineral resources. It is undoubtedly a place to visit, especially when you are into religious stuff, because Malaysia is filled with attractive statues and carvings representing thousands of years of their culture and tradition. In this article, the author will provide an accurate description of a place on a certain day in Malaysia called Concubine Lane, including the people there.
Concubine Lane
Consider being the most famous street in Ipoh. Concubine Lane is filled with souvenir shops, fashion outlets, and restaurants that serve authentic Malaysian dishes. The street can be too crowded sometimes because of its tight alley, but sometimes it is the crowd that makes it exciting to sightsee. As according to MalaysiaLife.Org, an organization that provides tips and reminders about various places in the country, Concubine lane has a lot of interesting and novelty-filled shops that tourists visit throughout the year. You would see tons of attractive signboards that will surely attract you to buy their products. It is sunny that day, and the skies are clear, so I did not bring my umbrella. Nonetheless, as according to Ronnie Chin, a writer for Malaysian newspaper company The Star, there are several places in Concubine Lane that are designed with umbrellas hanging across the streets. This might provide some protection for us travelers.
As you walk through the alley of this street, you may be wondering why it is called Concubine Streets in the first place, right? According to locals they said that wealthy Chinese and British officers kept their mistresses here in this street.

Instructions: Assignment 1: Entering the Conversation (15%)
Mary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone”
Your Task:
Throughout your academic and professional career you will be asked to summarize and respond to materials you engage with in order to “join the conversation.” Your first assignment of the semester asks you to look at Mary Louise Pratt’s “Arts of the Contact Zone” and join the conversation.
For this essay, you should:
Provide a brief summary of Pratt’s argument.
Join the conversation by either agreeing or disagreeing with her argument. Support your position by drawing on personal experiences or observations.
Audience:
Your audience for this assignment will be your instructor and your classmates, but you should pretend as though no one reading your essay has ever read Pratt’s article. Thus, you should thoroughly represent the text’s main ideas and key points and provide accurate textual evidence throughout.
Requirements:
To achieve your purpose with your audience, use the following strategies in your essay:
Introduce the text and the author at the beginning..
You must select an argument (claim) that Pratt makes, an argument that touches on an issue that you have ideas of your own to advance.
You must present this aspect of Pratt’s argument only, and then you must demonstrate to the reader your own argument on the issue(s) it raises.
In your rough draft, you need to briefly summarize Pratt’s point via a quotation, and then advance your own argument on the issue that has been raised.
It is always good to signal your reader and use reporting verbs such as “Pratt argues/claims/states,” “According to Pratt,” and “for Pratt, the solution appears to be,” etc.
Anytime you are summarizing, paraphrasing, or quoting from the article you should note it at the end of the sentence via an in-text citation, as following: (Pratt 537).
Formatting guidelines: at least 900 words (all drafts must be at least 900 words in order to get credit – this is equivalent to at least three full pages. Drafts exceeding four pages will lose points for lack of concision), Times New Roman, 12 font, standard margins, double spaced, using MLA format
Top right corner of all pages: Your last name and page number
Top left corner (1st page only): Your name, professor’s name, Class title, date submitted, who helped you
with the essay, if anyone (LRC tutors, name of a Penn State faculty member)
Title (1st page only): Double space again and center the title. Do not underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks; write the title in Title Case (standard capitalization), not in all capital letters (Come up with a unique title that reflects your particular essay).
Works cited page: The last page of your essay should be a works cited page, which lists the reference for Pratt’s essay. Copy and paste the following reference into your works cited page:
Pratt, Mary Louise. “Arts of the contact zone.” Ways of Reading: An Anthology for Writers, edited by David Bartholomae and Anthony Petrosky, Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2002, pp. 604-623. 4 pages / approx 1100 words | APA | English (US) 🇺🇸 | Essay | Literature & Language | Undergraduate |

ENGLISH 1100 – COMPOSITION I
WRITING PROJECT 3: WRITING WITH RESEARCH – TOPIC GUIDELINES
Word count: 1,500 (about 6 pages) Grade Value: 25%
Sources to be used for Writing Project #3:
• Your own ideas and experiences from either your Writing Project 1 (Writing from Personal Experience) to illustrate your ideas.
Topic and purpose for Writing Project #3:
Topic: Looking back on the experiences you described about a community problem in Writing Project 1 (Writing from Personal Experience). In Writing Project #3, you will formulate a claim about the question and argue that claim based on personal experience and fact-based evidence.
Purpose: In Writing Project #3, your question—and the answer to that question—will reflect your stance (a “claim”) on the issue you’re addressing in your essay. You will formulate and argue the claim using source material that provides fact-based evidence, and you will illustrate your claim about the issue by using your own personal experience. What Writing Project #3 is not: WP#3 is not an informative essay or a “how-to” essay. You will not address the reader directly or use source material that offers “advice” to the reader. Your essay must argue a claim about an issue.
Process for Developing Writing Project #3:
Develop and organize your WP3 first version:
Using your outline as a template, develop your ideas to create a WP3 first version:
• Create an introduction: Refer to your experience you told a story about in Writing Project #1 then transition into the broader issue that this experience raised. Ask your “main” question about the community problem and provide a thesis that states your claim in answer to the question.
• Develop supporting paragraphs (from your supporting points in your outline): Introduce each supporting paragraph with a topic sentence about a specific aspect of your claim that you want to explore. After each topic sentence, present information (from your own experience and ideas and from source material, correctly cited) that expands on idea in the topic sentence. • Write a conclusion: Refer back to your experiences in Writing Project 1 and reflect on your own experience and what you learned from your research that can help your community.
• Format a works cited listing to include citations for the outside sources, formatted in MLA style.
• Follow guidelines for development of ideas and use and citation of source material. Wp3 first versions that do not meet the minimum word requirement (1,500 words) and do not correctly use and cite sources both in-text and in the Works Cited listing will have points deducted.
Write your final version of Writing Project 3 (100 points): Based on the comments of your peer review partner(s) and the instructor as well as your own ideas for revision, you will decide if you want to revise to create a WP3 final version. WP3 final versions that do not have correctly cited sources both in-text and in the Works Cited listing will not receive a passing grade; once a final version is submitted, you will not have an opportunity to revise. 6 pages / approx 1650 words | English (US) 🇺🇸 | Essay | Literature & Language | MLA | Undergraduate |

Once you’ve chosen your term or concept, I’d like you to create a meme that reflects the concept. Include your meme in your post. Then, briefly (in one paragraph) explain your meme. Why did you pick this term, what are you trying to convey in your meme. Be original and creative. You won’t be able to see your classmates posts until you post so duplicate concepts will not be penalized. Your meme and explanation paragraph must be your original work.
