The organization accepts industrial discards from more than three hundred companies hence diverting them from landfills. Some of the materials include clothes and textiles, food and drinks packaging, furniture and fittings (Territory & Wales, 2010). The materials can be used by clients as art and craft, making costumes, making jewelry, film arts, theatre, and furniture. The company also offers education, educational tours and learning workshops for learning institutions and the general public (Maack, 2010). The organization was set up in 1974 by a team of teachers that was passionate about reducing the amount of solid waste that got its way into the landfills and promote the reusing of materials in their classroom. For the thirty-six years that the organization has been in operation, it has primarily focused on reducing land pollution, and providing the general public with affordable goods. The company has several revenue streams. It encourages donations of waste from residences, companies and industries to prevent the waste from going to landfills. It sells the reusable and recyclable items to the general public at a low cost and raises funds from running learning workshops, creative reuse sessions, and educating students on environmental conservation (Maack, 2010). The services offered by the company are accessed by customers when they visit the workshop in Marrickville. Most of the posts go without likes and retweets. There are almost zero replies on all the posts. A quick google search of Reverse Garbage directs one to the website of the company and the Facebook page. The company posts at least one post every day. The posts are mainly meant for marketing the items that are offered by the company. The company also shares news about the various projects that the company is involved in. The page contains items the company thinks are most relevant at a given point. For instance, in the face of the widely spreading Covid-19 pandemic, the company is advertising their creatively made and beautiful face masks. The images of the items captured are of a high quality and eye-catching. It is difficult to scroll through the page without stopping to admire the beautiful items. For each of the items, the price of the items is displayed. The company also uses the Facebook page to pass well whishes to the customers during holidays such as Easter and Christmas. The posts on the Facebook page are written in a clear and easy to understand language. They provide a brief description of the products before giving the price of the items. The posts, however, fail to give clear direction to the location where customers can find the items. The posts assume that the client had already gone through the about section of the page and found out the location. While the company provides a link to the online market where the people can shop for the products, most the posts do not direct the online users to the online market. While most of the posts are about self-promotion, the company also posts information that is useful to the followers. The company posts some of videos that guide people on various ways through which they can creatively divert residential waste. Lesson Material for your reference: Section One: What is Diversity and How Does it Impact Us? In the 1980s there was not one country that allowed same sex marriage. Most people where either ‘out’, and very political about being LGBT or, most, were in the ‘closet’. Same sex couples were not allowed to adopt children and most people thought of HIV/AIDS as the ‘gay disease’. Diversity and Marginalization: Thinking back to high school, your school might have had a poster with the word “Welcome” in many different languages. You are probably reminded of those days where you celebrated the diversity of your peers and you ate different ethnic foods and may have been introduced to traditional clothes and dances. That certainly is one side of diversity: the idea and belief that Canada is an accepting multicultural mosaic. However, that is only one side of the coin. In fact, there has been a long tradition of scholars and activists challenging the notion of diversity and multiculturalism. One such person is the York University scholar, Himani Bannerji. In her 2000 book, The Dark Side of the Nation: Essays on Multiculturalism, Nationalism and Gender, Bannerji identifies what she terms the ‘paradox of diversity’. Using the term/description “women of colour” as an example, she argues that the description creates a “vague and pleasant” description that replaces race with ‘colour’ and suggests alliance among women. Doesn’t “women of colour” sound much more pleasant than “gender and race”? By changing the way that something is described (recall multicultural / diversity attempts at your high school), Bannerji argues we erase the realities of race, racism, white privilege, and oppression. Her point is that using the terms such as ‘women of colour’ reflects ideologies of power relations by serving to regulate power. This other perspective on diversity suggests that human diversity is not about ‘getting along’ but that human diversity is part of historical and ideological oppression. On a sliding scale where diversity and multiculturalism are on the one end, and anti-oppression / anti-racism are on the other, it’s easy to imagine where Bannerji sits. To better understand white privilege, please read Peggy McIntosh’s (1988) excerpt about unpacking privilege (2 pages). As you read, take note of your thoughts and feelings. The reason why I wanted to include this discussion is because it is easy to think of human diversity as a vibrant celebration of colour, foods and diverse traditions rather than to dig a bit deeper and think about the systemic issues such as oppression and privilege that accompany human diversity. At this point, you are probably not surprised to hear that diversity in the context of community psychology is not so much about the ‘beauty of difference and getting along’ but about recognizing that “human diversity has multiple intersecting dimensions” and is “an important part of understanding differences and similarities between individuals and communities, but also variation within communities” (Kloos et al., 2012, pp. 7-8). According to Rappaport (1977), community psychology “is an attempt to support every person’s right to be different without risk of suffering material and psychological sanctions” (p. 1). This will often require the community psychologist to work toward providing socially marginal people with the resources, the power, and the control over their own lives, which is necessary for a society of diversity rather than conformity” (p. 23). Section Two: Power and Oppression Recall Himani Bannerji’s argument that ideologies of diversity and multiculturalism serve to strengthen existing power relations such as racism, oppression of others and white privilege. What do we mean when we refer to power and oppression? According to Kloos and colleagues (2012), “oppression occurs in a hierarchical relationship in which a dominant group unjustly holds power and resources and withholds them from another group” (p. 231). The Social Construction of Power: To make those concepts livelier, I’d like you to watch a very interesting video on the social construction of oppression. In this video, you will watch a third grade teacher simulate the social construction of discrimination by introducing a two-day exercise to her class where students were intentionally discriminated against based on the colour of their eyes. Oppression and Colonization: As you have seen in this lesson, there are many forms of oppression. It can be overt (obvious and intentional) and it can also be covert (unintentionally discriminating against an individual or group of individuals based on pre-conceived assumptions that we have—biases that often come from “single stories”). Another important concept to learn is “intersectionality”. Intersectionality refers to the interconnections between multiple socially constructed categorizations (e.g., race, gender, social class). Oppression of an individual or group with multiple intersecting personal identities becomes driven by multiple intersecting systems of discrimination and marginalization (Kloos et al., 2012). For example, examining the social mechanisms that drive violence against lesbian women of colour must consider the overlapping, complex nature of the various systems of oppression—rather than examining each factor separately. Oppression can also be systemic. For example, the colonization of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals, families, and communities is a form of oppression that has persisted throughout the history of Canada and continues to exist today. So far in this course, you have learned a bit about some of the inequalities and discrimination faced by Aboriginal people in Canada. Now that you have also been introduced to different ways of understanding and honouring diversity, I would like for you to read a brief chapter (14 pages) written by a Mohawk woman , Patricia Monture-Angus, who worked as a legal scholar in several Canadian law schools. This chapter is a story of her experience as “a woman, an Indian, and an Indian woman” (note: intersectionality) attending an academic conference about oppression. She challenges language around “disadvantage” and speaks about her experiences as a “minority”. Michael Kenny For this week’s discussion, I am going to focus on providing guidance on making a school safer through utilization of CPTED. The first thing that I would ask the school district to consider, is the installation of cameras all throughout the facility. In my experience, I have found that individuals tend to behave better knowing that the entire school is under constant video monitoring. The pdf from our week 4 reading “CPTED 101: The Fundamentals for Schools,” provides excellent information on how to make new and existing schools safer through CPTED by offering, “three simple concepts: surveillance, access control, and territoriality.” These three concepts would be my next focus in presenting resolutions to their safety concerns for the school. Surveillance refers to the ability of the school personnel to see throughout their school. Can they see who is coming or going? Are there large brick walls that block “hiding spots” or restrict ability for staff to see who is sneaking in or out of the building? If so, those walls should be replaced with windows or slotted gates that provide visibility. Large or overgrown trees and shrubs should be cleared and cut back as well to provide easy viewing inside and around the building. Any areas that may be good hiding spots throughout the building should be removed entirely or, “install convex mirrors to provide visibility around corners” (CPTED 101.pdf). Surveillance also encompasses the lighting throughout the school. There are mixed opinions on wether or not a school should remain well-lit after hours, with some finding that a dark, unlit property provides a deterrence. I would personally suggest that the school be dark after hours and note, “School resource officers have found that good lighting made schools ideal hangouts after hours, while darkness discouraged kids from congregating” (CPTED 101.pdf). I would then advise the school district that access control is an absolute must for their school. All visitors should be directed to a single entrance that can be effectively monitored. All other entrances, to include windows, should be reconfigured, “so that they automatically lock when closed and only serve as emergency exits” (CPTED 101.pdf). An important factor to consider in designing the safety for a school is the necessity to call a lockdown in the event of emergencies, such as active shooter incidents. For this reason, it is very critical that access into the building is reduced to a single point of entry, with the ability for staff to see who is approaching lock down the school with a push of a button if necessary. Clear line of sight from the main office would provide that time and ability to see any threat, and installation of an auto-lock feature and public address system would provide sufficient ability to lock the entrance and signal a lock-down. Lastly, I would advise that territoriality be addressed. This is the process of establishing clear messaging of how the school is managed as well as clearly established boundaries around the property that let someone know they are on school grounds. This can be accomplished through well groomed hedges that line the property and signs that note “no trespassing on school property” after a certain time. In closing, I would advise that providing proper surveillance, access control, and territoriality will will most certainly create a safer environment to the school. Molinari, J. Week 4 reading. Northeastern University Destiny Hamilton When thinking about the violence and trying to ensure that schools are secure and safe, it takes careful planning and time to ensure top notch work to the last detail. Before the pandemic, students faced violence and the schools (some) really did not address the issue appropriately. The violence students faced were bullying, fighting,and cyber bullying. The way many schools were designed, with stairwells, sometimes students could easily walk into a bully who was standing around the corner and be attacked. Others were bold enough to push or forcefully hit the student causing her to fall and receive serious injuries. Fighting takes place in open and closed areas, preferably in closed areas such locker rooms or in the gym after classes were over for the day. Cyber bullying has been a problem that encouraged bullying and fighting. While in school bullies were able to still use the iPads, computers, and even their cell phones to harass and bully others. So with this knowledge, policies can be in place and enforced for those students who use the schools property to bully and/or harass students. Using the IP address for the computer or iPad, it can be traced to the student. Once identification is known, the device should be confiscated and the student expelled. Depending on the severity of the bullying or harassment, other charges can be given because the police can be called in. Many school districts look at this type of behavior when students are not in school as well. It would be recommended to the board and others to revamp the stairwells by tearing down the walls and have open stairs without the walls. The only thing would be the handrails which leaves all open space where everything can be seen. This would be an ideal to plan for building new schools. Another factor to improve or create would be surveillance cameras at everydoor entrance. There should the same type of cameras at the doors inside the gym, cafeteria, even at the outside of these places. To respect the privacy of students cameras would not be inside the bathrooms or locker rooms. However there needs to be some at the entrances. While there are entrances around the schools to be used as fire escapes these doors should be the type that have silent alarm when it is opened or someone props it open for unlawful entrance or exit. The cameras would have the person on camera to help identify the person or persons. There needs to be one entrance to go in and out of the school. Cameras would be in place at each entrance along with metal detectors to pass through. In the office, any person who will be moving through the school will have to get a pass with his or her picture on the pass which is taken after signing in. This is to be worn on the clothing to be seen and identified as having permission to be going to a designated class or area. These are just some thoughts as to how our schools can be made safer.
