The Concept of ‘Lovers’ in Sappho, Iliad, and Oresteia
Love has always been an important and pervasive theme in classical literature. From Herodotus’ The Histories to other pieces of literature, the capacity of love to overcome all odds has been illustrated in different shapes and sizes. Accordingly, this article would focus on the classical humanities and social interaction through love and compassion reflected in different Grecian poems. Specifically, it would compare and contrast different literary articulations of love in Sappho, Iliad, and the Oresteia. All in all, I believe that a greater understanding and appreciation of these pieces could be achieved at the poets’ personal lives in relation to thematic expressions and the styles applied in their articulations.

Love and Agency

Early Greek Literature was mostly dominated by male authors such as Plato, Aristotle, and Homer, among others. Thus, most of the works during those times have focused on the agency of male over everything including lust and love. In contrast, Sappho is the only female writer from the ancient Lesbos. Thus, in a world dominated by male voices, Sappho’s works have focused on emphasizing the voices of wives and women, perhaps in an effort to signify the agency and free will of women contrary to current views of those time.
To achieve her purpose, Sappho uses women as the main character in her works and highlighted how their decisions affect the external world. For example, she portrayed the intensity of Helen’s love towards Paris by emphasizing Helen’s personal decision to go with the love of her life. This approach is entirely different from the story-telling utilized by Homer’s Iliad and Aeschylus’ Oresteia. On the one hand, the Iliad portrayed that Helen’s act of eloping with Paris was due to the latter ‘abducting’ her instead of being to her own free will (Johnson, 2018). On other hand, the Oresteia emphasized that the reason for the war was because of Paris’ treachery and Helen’s betrayal. It is clear from these alone that both works of Homer and Aeschylus relegated women’s agency or free will in pursuing the one that they love relative to that of men.

Cooperative Learning Groups Research Design Exercise This exercise is designed to help you choose a research design for your proposal. Use your cooperative learning group to help you settle on a final design. I don’t expect anyone to be able to answer all of these questions right now. However, finding the answers to these questions will help guide your final proposal. Instructions Take 15–20 minutes and answer as many of the questions that follow as possible. You have answered some of these questions in the past; others will be new for you. Remember, it is okay for your research questions or design to change as you learn more about the feasibility of your evaluation. Questions you don’t feel comfortable with or are unsure about, leave blank and ask your cooperative learning group for help. 1. What is your research question? What are the major effective measures to support mental health program? 2. What is the outcome you are studying or what are the variables you are studying if it is not an outcome study?Better effectiveness in implementing mental health care program for individuals in the community. 3. Is this a qualitative or quantitative study? Does it have elements of both? Explain. This will be a Quantitative data in order to help one see the big picture of my research. 4. Is it a formative or summative evaluation? Explain. It will be a summative for me to be able to analyze my achievement in the end of my research. 5. What is the design of your study? What are the strengths of this design? What are the limitations? A case study design 6. From whom will you collect data? Staff members /co-workers 7. Will you use a sample? If so what is your sampling strategy? 8. What method will you use to collect the data (survey, interviews, administrative or secondary data, etc.)? Convenience 9. Are there any ethical or IRB issues with your study? After completing as many of these questions as possible, meet with your cooperative learning group. Each member of the group will present your research question(s) and summarize his or her design. Then, the presenting group member should share questions with which they are struggling. As a group, discuss next steps for the presenting member’s final research or evaluation proposal. We will discuss requirements for the final research proposal during next week’s session. In addition, provide the following feedback to each presenter: 1. If he or she has presented a design, identify one threat to the internal validity of the study (Remember, this does not mean you have to change your design, you just have to be aware of this limitation. All studies have limitations.). 2. Provide one suggestion for how you think the study can be improved or made more feasible.

Instructions: This assignment should be done after studying Units 12 and 13 and completing the quizzes for these units. Complete both case studies. Case Study A (50%): Marlie carries on a business of selling new and used lamps. In 2009, she obtained an operating line of credit from the Bank of Nova Scotia. Marlie gave the bank a security interest in all her present and future assets. Jordan is a dealer in imported chandeliers. He and Marlie agree that he will give her possession of a dozen chandeliers to sell on his behalf. Marlie is not obliged to pay for the chandeliers unless she keeps them for more than 30 days. Marlie goes into default on her loan. The bank seizes all of her inventory, including the 12 chandeliers. Jordan finds out about the seizure and demands the chandeliers, saying that they are his, but the bank disputes this. Is Jordan entitled to get the chandeliers back? Structure your answer following the Marking Rubric below. Marking Rubric Marking Criteria Mark 1. In relation to the contest between the bank and Jordan, identifies the legal question in relation to the chandeliers, which is raised by the scenario. /10 2. Identifies and explains the possible legal relationship between Jordan and Marlie that may benefit Jordan and why it would benefit him. /10 3. Identifies the factual elements, which must be proved to show the existence of the legal relationship referred to above. /10 4. Analyzes the scenario to see if the factual elements referred to above are present. /10 5. Comes to a conclusion concerning the strength of Jordan’s claim based on the analysis above. /10 Total /50 Case Study B (50%): Luke owns a lifeguard consulting company, supplying lifeguarding services to public and private schools in Edmonton. One of his female employees has made a complaint to the Alberta Human Rights Commission against Luke concerning gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. The employee alleges that she and the other women lifeguards were recently forced to wear newly issued skimpy company bikinis instead of the previous one-piece suits while performing their lifeguarding duties. Those who refused would be given last choice on shifts (which, practically speaking, meant that they would be getting no shifts). The complainant protested to Luke but eventually gave in since it was too late in the summer to find another job. Additionally, the employee claims that, since the female staff was forced to wear the bikinis, Luke drops in constantly for site visits. His visits with females are more frequent and much longer lasting than with male staff. In fact, it is alleged that these visits have earned him the nickname of “Leering Luke.” Several female employees have told Luke that they find his behaviour unwelcome and are uncomfortable wearing the bikinis. Luke knows about his nickname but stands behind his policy. According to Luke, business has increased and, as a result, there has been more to “supervise” at each visit. Explain the concepts of gender discrimination and sexual harassment. Identify facts in the scenario which may support the employee’s claim and consider what other unstated facts, if proved, might also provide support. Identify a defense that Luke may raise. State your conclusion whether the situation involved discrimination or harassment, referring to the relevant facts and the strength of the defense. The following websites will help you with Case Study B: Alberta Human Rights: Discrimination (PDF) Alberta Human Rights Commission: Sexual harassments Alberta Human Rights Commission: Bona fide occupational requirements Structure your answer following the Marking Rubric below. Marking Rubric Marking Criteria Mark 1. Identifies and explains the legal descriptions (or definitions) of gender discrimination and sexual harassment. /10 2. Lists the facts that may tend to show discrimination or harassment and explain why they do. Suggests any other facts which are not stated but might be implied that also support the claim. /15 3. Identifies and explains a defense Luke may raise in relation to his actions. Suggests facts which are not stated but might be implied that undermine this defense. /15 4. This week’s reading is the famous (at least among entrepreneurial academics) theorem called PORTER’S 5 FORCES MODEL. Consider the 5 forces as described in the reading. Let’s go back to the example of general Mills that we discussed in class. Remember how they charted a course into a new sector of the food industry? If you were one of the founders of General Mills for example, how would you have assessed these 5 forces as you staked out your market niche? In your response, please describe your assessment of each of these 5 forces. On a scale of High/Medium/Low, rate each of these risks as viewed by the founding entrepreneurs. In other words, how would you rate these 5 forces is you were a Generall Mills owner? No need to go more than 1 page.

Critical Viewing of the Art Gallery of Ontario Carol Duncan and Allan Wallach’s “The Universal Survey Museum.” Michael Snow (Canadian), Walking Women (entrance, AGO) Format: 1100 words. double-spaced, 12-point font, standard margins. Name your file in this format: i.e. Wang_045938_AGOEssay Upload on Quercus in DOC or DOCX format. Components of the Assignment: Reading 1: Carol Duncan and Allan Wallach, “The Universal Survey Museum,” Art History 3 no. 4 (1980): 448-469. (Quercus) Reading 2: Dana Arnold, chapter 3, “Presenting Art History,” in Art History: A Very Short Introduction. Visit to the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto Description of the Assignment: In your essay, you will 1) apply Duncan and Wallach’s arguments to the architecture and spatial arrangement of the Art Gallery of Ontario. 2) evaluate 2 specific installations (see list below) in the museum as evidence of the AGO’s responsiveness to racial/national/indigenous/feminist/non-Western critiques of the “universal museum” described in Duncan &Wallach’s essay. A successful essay will integrate the two parts of the assignment. For background on Canada’s history, with reference to its indigenous peoples, and efforts to address historical injustices, see: https://www(dot)cbc(dot)ca/news/entertainment/museums-review-indigenous-representation-1.5101817 About the AGO: Founded in 1900, the AGO is a municipal art gallery, funded with public and private funds. Until recently, its collections focused on European and North American art (a survey of “western” art). Ancient art, the arts of Asia, Africa, Latin American, and Australia were not part of its collections for decades. The AGO has been through several building phases, the last of which saw a new façade, additions to the entrance sequence, and a large addition to the back adding an upper floor by Frank Gehry (2008). An important part of the original building is visible inside in the Walker Court, where Frank Gehry also made a visible intervention. Essay Part 1: The Ritual of the AGO. In this part of the essay, evaluate the AGO as an example of a universal survey museum, as analyzed by D & W. Evaluate the kind of ritual the AGO creates for the viewer by means of the architecture and objects installed in its entrance sequence. For Part 1 Analysis of the following elements is required: a) Entrance space with Michael Snow sculpture b) Walker Court and c) Gehry Staircase Spaces (see map of Ground Floor for the spaces in pink). Essay Part 2: What is the AGO’s subject position? In this part of the essay evaluate the AGO’s participation in and redress of implicit ideological positions in specific installations in the museum (see list below) D & W describe the formation of the museum – which was implicitly white, male, and Western – and the enactment of a civilizing process through the history of art. In Part 2, consider whether the AGO is a universal survey museum and whether it has reconsidered the white/western/male narrative characteristic of that museum type’s history. Look for those exclusions, and new inclusions, with attention to how they are presented in 2 of these works of art or galleries: For part 2, analysis of 2 of the following 6 installations is required: 1. Magical and Talismanic Art in Ethiopia A small one-room temporary exhibition of “medieval art” from Ethiopia (listen to the 5-minute video of a discussion by curators) 2. Gallery 136 “Europe’s Dilemma” (modern art). Who is represented in this gallery? Inclusions and exclusions? 3. Gallery 115 Bronze Crucifix by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1650s) and three photographs by Rebecca Belmore (contemporary), an artist of indigenous descent. 4. Gallery 126 “Canadian Art of the early 1900s”: Specifically Emily Carr, Church in Yuquot Village (1929) and Sonny Assu, Re-Invaders: Digital Intervention of an Emily Carr Painting (2014). 5. Gallery 234 (2nd floor): “Indigenous (Canadian) art II”: Specifically: Kent Monkman The Academy (2008) 6. Gallery 227 Esmaa Mohamoud, A Seat Above the Table (2018) These spaces are marked in green on the map Installations #3-#5 are newly acquired works by indigenous artists. The arts of the indigenous peoples of this land were collected by the Royal Ontario Museum for their “ethnographic” collections (alongside natural history specimens), rather than by the AGO, an “art museum”. The AGO’s collections were primarily European and North American painting until relatively recently, when new geographical regions and the arts of the indigenous peoples of Canada began to be actively collected. For context about the indigenous peoples of Canada and the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s 2015 articles that inform the museum’s installations see: https://www(dot)thecanadianencyclopedia(dot)ca/en/article/aboriginal-people https://www(dot)cbc(dot)ca/news/entertainment/museums-review-indigenous-representation-1.5101817 https://en(dot)wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Truth_and_Reconciliation_Commission_of_Canada How to proceed: READ the Duncan & Wallace essay carefully, taking notes and summarizing its main arguments for yourself. You might write up a page or two of principal points just about the article before turning to the AGO part of the project. READ Chapter 3 of Dana Arnold’s Art History: Very Short Introduction, which concentrates on the institutions of art history, including museums. Because she discusses the history of museums and some contemporary examples, it will help you formulate questions about the AGO. Jot down the questions that you would want to answer at the AGO. Arnold’s chapter makes one aware of the significance of when a museum was founded; what its goals might have been at the time; how its collections come into being. This isn’t a research project — you are not expected to answer these questions about the AGO. And you are not allowed to use any research materials -– base your essay entirely on the museum itself. STUDY THE PLAN (see PDF in Quercus Module) Before visiting the museum itself in person study the plan of the museum that is also online: https://ago(dot)ca/visit/gallery-map. Analyze it. How much space is given to European art, Canadian art, First Nations art, African art, Latin American art, Asian art. How does the AGO comply with the museum types discussed by Duncan and Wallach?

Essay #4: Comedy, the first person, & empathy   English 110 Background: In this unit, we’ll watch two comedy specials that function as monologues and soliloquys: Hannah Gadsby’s “Nanette” and Hasan Minhaj’s “Homecoming King.” Both of these pieces are like first-person essays, or like memoir, combined with an artistic, deliberate visual performance. These comics use their comedy as a way to discuss difficult issues, like homophobia, sexual assault, racism, and class. We’ll also read critical essays on first-person writing itself, and consider how these theories can help us understand these comics’ messages. Every choice the comic makes—what words they choose, their punchlines and repetition, their eye contact, their movement, their gestures—are all a part of their message. The way they tell their story is as important as the story itself. Their first-person narrative and performance help us, the audience, feel empathy for the speaker in different ways, and help us accept difficult issues that we might not accept otherwise. Learning Goals: Your goal for this essay is to expand your knowledge of close reading of literary elements (essay #1), analysis of broader themes and structures (essay #2), integrating a real-world lens (essay #3), and combine all of these skills into one coherent, analytical argument.   The task: Choose one of the comedians from this unit, and then write a 1,500-word essay answering the following questions:
  1. What is the message of this monologue/soliloquy?
  2. How does their form of the monologue/soliloquy help the reader to feel empathy and accept this difficult idea?
How to do it: More detail You will be considering how the comedians in this unit use first-person narration to convey their message. Remember to analyze means to break down. You should treat your chosen monologue/soliloquy the way you would any of the pieces we’ve read this semester, and consider how the different tools the comic uses come together to create meaning.   For your thesis: This is another way of asking about the theme of the piece! But in this case, you’re specifically considering the relationship between how they tell their first-person story, empathy, and their message.   For your body paragraphs: Consider the tools the comics use/the elements of the comedy routine, both verbal and visual (specifically, metaphors and similes, structure, pacing, word choice, tone, posture, facial expressions, visual elements, gestures, etc.) and how each allows us to develop empathy and connect with the speaker in order to accept their idea. Audience: Consider your reader as someone not in our class. They will need context and explanation for who your comic is, what their special is about, and any key terms you’re using. Outside Source Requirement: For this essay, please integrate at least one of the critical sources on first-person narratives we discuss in class/I provide for you to help support your argument about the comic’s message. Your source should be integrated in a meaningful way, rather than just thrown in as a single quote. (more on next page) Need help? Review my lecture videos, your homework and prewriting assignments, and make an appointment at the writing center, or with me! I’m happy to help. Requirements (what to do to pass) (A essays do these things very well and are highly polished)
  • 1,500 words minimum
  • Demonstrate your analysis and close reading skills throughout
  • Demonstrate knowledge of literary elements
  • Include a compelling introduction that includes a hook, introduces your chosen piece, and includes a thesis
  • Include evidence—each body paragraph should include at least one quote from either your chosen comic or a critical source
  • Meaningfully include at least one critical source
  • Includes a conclusion that answers the “and now what?” question
  • Be thoroughly proofread (especially for homonyms and lowercase i’s)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of sentence boundaries
  • Demonstrate deliberate paragraphing choices (one main idea per paragraph)
  • Include a title
  • Use a 12-point, readable font
  • Be double-spaced
  • Include page numbers
  • Include an MLA Works Cited page
  • Be original work—As stated on the syllabus: You may not pay someone else to write your essay. You may not Google what others have said about the comic and use that to come up with ideas. All ideas must be your own. Our class time will help you generate your own ideas! You must write your paper yourself. Consulting sources that specifically discuss the comic, in physical print or online, will be considered cheating unless it is properly and judiciously documented.
