Imagine that you are troubled that a good friend is a very heavy smoker. Discuss how you could use compliance strategies, such as the foot-in-the-door technique, low-balling, the door-in-the-face technique, the norm of reciprocity, and exploitations of mindlessness to get their friend to quit smoking. Write a brief report (maximum 500 words), and be sure to use your textbook and notes for background to support your strategy, using at least 3 of the listed techniques.

Understanding the importance of persuasion strategies is crucial for any individual. It allows him to have better capabilities to help others change their negative behaviors. In line with this, I would like to provide a brief report on some strategies that could help others improve or address these strategies.

Compliance Techniques
One of the strategies that could be used to change the behavior of a friend who is a heavy smoker is the use of the foot-in-the-door technique. The foot-in-the-door technique provides that asking an individual to agree with a small request would increase the individual’s likelihood of agreeing to a more significant request. In line with this, I could reduce the number of sticks that his friend consumes per day. For example, if your friend is consuming 12 sticks per day, you can ask him to reduce it to a maximum of 11 sticks for one week. After complying with this, I could then ask my friend to reduce his number of sticks by 2 sticks per day for the next week. However, note that one of the problems with this technique is that the individual could treat the initial request with reluctance.

In line with this, it would be best to use small rewards or affirmations to elicit a positive response from my friend.
The second strategy that I can use is the low-balling strategy. This strategy initially offers a product or a service at a lower price, and then it would be suddenly increased to increased the customer’s commitment. In line with the case at hand, I would initially entice my friend to pay a single dollar in his savings account for every single cigarette that he consumes per day.

Attached is an Excel spreadsheet containing Bureau of Labor Statistics Data. Preview the document for mean salary and number of employment positions available based on a particular occupation code sorted by state. Think about a state you wish to work in. Create a table or tab in the worksheet of all of the occupations in your state of choice that have the word “manage”* in the Occupational Title field. You’ve now created a subset of the original data set from which additional analysis can be made. *The term managerial positions will be defined as any position with the word “manage” in the title. The reason the word “manage” should be used as a filter is that this will include occupations with the word manager or management in the title. Answer the following questions using the data subset you created: What is the average salary for your chosen state of all managerial positions? How many total managerial positions are available in your state? What percentage of the total number of employment positions in your state are managerial positions? ***Hint: You will need to refer back to all of the positions in your state to calculate this. What does this information mean to you as a prospective job seeker in this state looking for a managerial position?

Readings: Zadie Smith, Joy Helen Rosner, Christ in the Garden of Endless Breadsticks In ‘Joy, Smith invites us to rethink the experience of ‘pleasure’ and ‘joy’ and argues that the experience of joy is central to the human experience. In the first paper, I would like you to put Smith’s theory of joy to work, determining whether it can help us understand the appeal of ‘The Olive Garden’ as discussed by Rosner. To what extent can we use Smith’s understanding of ‘joy’ and ‘pleasure’ to rethink the ‘agonies and ecstasies’ of the Olive Garden? How might Rosner’s view of the Olive Garden help refine or complicate Smith’s understanding of joy? Additional questions you might want to consider: Are there moments of ‘joy’ in Rosner’s discussion of eating at The Olive Garden? In what way do they conform to ‘joy’? In what way are they different? How could this be related to Gaugin’s painting? For Smith, joy has a complicated process. Is there something similar at the Olive Garden? Is the experience of eating food always simply a pleasure? Does Rosner offer a more positive version of what Smith calls ‘joy’? A more negative one? Smith often refers to pleasure as a release from anxiety. What is the role of anxiety in both essays?

Hi, Please read the instructions for this assignment below. Please let me know which topic would you like to write about. The books we read so far including The Iliad and The Odyssey both by Homer, The Oresteia, Genesis, Job, and Sappho if not, winter. I would personally recommend to write The Iliad or odyssey. I must show proof of attendance to the Museum. You can find pictures online and please let me know which museum in NYC and topic did you pick then I will go there and take a picture of the one you write to show attendance. I would greatly appreciate it! just like the last assignment you did, do not use many big or really complicated words, but the ideas and structure of the essay must be super CLEAR. Thank you Want to ignore historical context and focus on your experience and your own analysis of the cultural piece. You may want to consider your own experience at the museum or theatrical event. And. discuss how this experience reshaped your interpretation or relationship to a text(s) we read this past semester. (Museum: what pieces were around it? Was the piece displayed as part of a theme, historical period, or an artist’s work? How did that shape your interaction with it? Theater: what was the production like? The sets? Costumes? The spectacle?) It is up to you. and there are many other ways you can approach this writing piece. OPTION TWO: For option two. discuss the connection between your creation and a text we read. You might approach this like a book review or artist exhibit review in a newspaper, discussing the major themes you sought to develop. Or. you might reflect on the process of making your work – what choices did you make in crafting your poetry/music/film etc.? Why? What inspired you initially from the original work that led to your creation? How did the process of creating this work make you appreciate a new aspect of the texts we read or the authors who wrote them? Again, it is up to you. and there are many other ways you can approach this writing piece. 1 Core in Contemporary Culture Due: Nov 8th1.1 The Core and Contemporary Culture Assignment: This assignment asks you to be creative and connect the literature we have read this semester to contemporary culture. You must submit 2-3 page writing assignment. 1) One option is that you may select a piece of NYC based western visual art. theater or film and examine them in conjunction with a piece of literature from this semester. These may be found through a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or attendance of a performance (theater, poetiy. dance, etc.) in NYC. Write an analysis examining the piece/pieces you chose to discuss, relating them to the literature we have read, and how the engagement with the pieces you chose makes you think reflect understand the literature we have read this semester. As creativity is a component of the assignment, be selective in picking what you want to write about. 2) Alternatively, you may develop your own creative project (visual art. theater, poetiy. dialogue, letter). In addition to submitting your piece, you must write an analysis explaining how your work interprets and relates to literature we have read. Grading of this assignment will be based to some degree on creativity but mostly on your ability to present a clear, organized piece of writing that demonstrates an engagement with the text. DUE: The written assignments are due 11/9. In addition to submitting your written piece, you must show proof of attendance (photos of tickets or attendance/selected pieces) that may be submitted via email. For those of you going on the Met Tour. be creative in your selection of what work you want to use for your assignment. You may want to pick a piece not discussed on the torn- itself. You are welcome to go to the Met on your own time and pick a piece. **It is not necessary to construct an argument in the way that you do for the analytic essays. However, your essay, should be organized, and an argument or at least a clear introduction explaining the piece that you selected or created and its connection to the text(s) this past semester, may be helpful. I would also encourage you to make the connection between the cultural piece and what you saw obvious. Show engagement both with the text we read this past semester and draw connections between the text and the cultural piece you chose. You should cite or reference the text as needed. OPTION ONE: If you are doing option ONE. you have a variety of options. You may want to consider the historical context in which the cultural piece you selected was created.

Choose two objects in the current chapters in your textbook that are thematically related (landscapes, portraits, religious subjects, historical monuments, etc.). Write an essay of at least 450 words using 12 point font and double-spaced text) comparing the formal treatment and iconography of each work. Be sure to identify each object by indicating the artist, title, and date of production. Your essay should address how similarities and differences contribute to your understanding of each work’s meaning or artistic significance. You should analyze these points: stylistic choices (e.g., abstract, naturalistic, idealistic, realistic), function or symbolism of the pieces (What were they used for? Do they communicate a message? Are they sacred or secular works of art), cultural context (e.g., how might the way of life at the time and place the pieces were created affected their function and style? Do historical events relate to the image or story depicted?). In addition, I expect you to refer to the course readings, including the primary readings I uploaded to BlackBoard, in the essays. You must cite at least one source that is not our text book. Use Chicago-Turabian style notation for any sources that you need to document as references in footnotes. Double-space your text and list your name and the date in the header on the first page. In almost all cases, you should italicize the title of a work of art. In this assignment you will write an autobiographical essay about your own gender identity. Questions you should consider addressing include: ● What gender were you assigned at birth? Who decided? Based on what information did they make the decision? How did your parents feel about your sex/gender? What expectations did they have of you and your life based on what sex you were assigned at birth? One thing you could do is talk to (in person or over the phone) the people who were there when you were born and ask them about this. ● How do you think your life would have been different if you had been born a different sex/gender? ● What was your gender socialization like during early childhood? When is the first time you became aware of your gender or can remember thinking “I am a boy.” or “I am a girl.” Where were you? How did you find out you were a boy/girl? What did you think of it? ● What were the main gender milestones throughout your life? What were the defining moments of your gender? When you think of your own gender identity, what are the specific memories that you have and why are they meaningful to you? ● What are the things you feel like you have to/must do because of your gender identity? What are you required to do? What are you not allowed to do? What parts of your gender identity do you like? What parts do you dislike and why? Are there things you wish you could do that you can’t/don’t do because of your gender? ● Are there ways that you are gender-nonconforming? How? Why? ● In what ways is your gender stereotypical? How? Why? ● How are you treated because of your gender? What are aspects of this treatment do you like/dislike? ● What choices do you make about your gender? How do you do your gender? What kind of man or woman (or other) are you? What kind of man/woman/other do you want to or try to be? What aspects of your gender are important to you? ● What roles do you play in your life because of what your gender is? ● Whose gender do you admire (this could be someone you know in your life or a famous person or a character — whatever) — why do you admire it? ● How is your gender influenced by other aspects of your identity (e.g. your race, sexuality, age, culture, religion, ethnicity, etc)? Formatting guidelines: 5-10 double-spaced pages 12 pt font, not bold, not italicized, Times New Roman or Arial or Calibri or Garamond. Use headings that break your paper into sections. You have a lot of freedom in how you organize it. You should decide which of the above questions are most interesting to you, what stories you want to tell, in what order, etc. I’d say just start writing and see what happens. After you draft it, read what you have written and then write an introduction telling the reader (me) what’s to come. Be brave. Get creative. Tell stories. Use concepts that we have learned in the course. Tie readings or films into your essay about yourself. I.e. describe parts of this course (or others) that have impacted the way that you think about your own gender identity. This is really an essay about you — but lean on course materials where it is useful or helpful. I encourage you to be vulnerable and personal but obviously don’t disclose anything you’re not willing to share with me.

1) Explain the context of your primary text (what are the various issues at stake, positions people take, and relevance to our discussions?) 2) What’s your thinking so far on that text? Are there relevant popular resources you may use?). While your particular primary and secondary texts are up to you, everyone must select from within the following three umbrella topics: • The empowerment or disenfranchisement of particular social groups through the use of comedy, including race, class, and/or gender o Consider comics who take on race, class, gender, sexuality explicitly in their work and examine how they engage those topics and to what end. • The rhetorical value of irony o Consider comics like Stephen Colbert who employ irony as their primary method of advancing an argument – what are they able to accomplish through those ends and are there limits? • Rhetorical transgression o Consider comics who “go too far.” What can an examination of how a particular comic has gone too far help us understand our culture and society? We need to research and write about a biological influence and psychological/social influence on a chosen facet of sexuality. I have attached a topics list to pick from. I would prefer the topic “pair bonding” but it is largely up the the writer based on the sources they find. We need to find four primary sources to cite to support our claims, two primary sources to support the biological influence on our facet of sexuality and two primary sources to support the the psychological/social influence. I’ve also attached assignment instructions and the rubric, and an APA guide.   PSYCH 204 HUMAN SEXUALITY Research Assignment Instructions Select one facet of human sexuality (e.g., sexual orientation, gender identity, attraction) and discuss BOTH of the following: • A biological influence on your chosen topic • A psychological or social influence on your chosen topic The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop insight into the biological, social, and psychological perspectives that inform issues of human sexuality. As we have seen, many topics in this course are multifaceted and have multiple influencing factors. Examples of topics and hints about what would make an appropriate topic are posted to D2L. The assignment is worth 16% of your final grade. Without approved documentation, late assignments will be penalized 10% per day, including weekends. Documentation must be submitted before the deadline to be considered. Citations You will need to cite two primary sources for the biological influence and two primary sources for the psychological/social influence, for a total of four primary sources. A primary source includes a book or a peer-reviewed journal article. Using a magazine (such as Scientific American) is not a proper peer-reviewed source and will not get you full marks. Do not use Wikipedia for your references, as Wikipedia is open to edit by anyone and is not peer-reviewed. Remember that you MUST cite every idea that you write about that is not your own. Even if you just cited the same source in the sentence before. When in doubt, include a citation. It is better to paraphrase an idea than to directly quote it – use direct quotes sparingly and only when they are really necessary for impact. Remember though that when you paraphrase it is still an idea from another source and it must be cited. Format The total assignment will be a maximum of four pages, not including your cover page and reference (i.e., up to six pages altogether including the cover page and reference page). Use Times New Roman, 12 pt font, double spaced. Use 1” margins on the page. You must follow proper APA formatting to get full marks (details about APA formatting are posted to D2L)

The AGO has been through several building phases, the last of which saw a new façade, additions to the entrance sequence, and a large addition to the back adding an upper floor by Frank Gehry (2008). An important part of the original building is visible inside in the Walker Court, where Frank Gehry also made a visible intervention. Essay Part 1: The Ritual of the AGO. In this part of the essay, evaluate the AGO as an example of a universal survey museum, as analyzed by D & W. Evaluate the kind of ritual the AGO creates for the viewer by means of the architecture and objects installed in its entrance sequence. For Part 1 Analysis of the following elements is required: a) Entrance space with Michael Snow sculpture b) Walker Court and c) Gehry Staircase Spaces (see map of Ground Floor for the spaces in pink). Essay Part 2: What is the AGO’s subject position? In this part of the essay evaluate the AGO’s participation in and redress of implicit ideological positions in specific installations in the museum (see list below) D & W describe the formation of the museum – which was implicitly white, male, and Western – and the enactment of a civilizing process through the history of art. In Part 2, consider whether the AGO is a universal survey museum and whether it has reconsidered the white/western/male narrative characteristic of that museum type’s history. Look for those exclusions, and new inclusions, with attention to how they are presented in 2 of these works of art or galleries: For part 2, analysis of 2 of the following 6 installations is required: 1. Magical and Talismanic Art in Ethiopia A small one-room temporary exhibition of “medieval art” from Ethiopia (listen to the 5-minute video of a discussion by curators) 2. Gallery 136 “Europe’s Dilemma” (modern art). Who is represented in this gallery? Inclusions and exclusions? 3. Gallery 115 Bronze Crucifix by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1650s) and three photographs by Rebecca Belmore (contemporary), an artist of indigenous descent. 4. Gallery 126 “Canadian Art of the early 1900s”: Specifically Emily Carr, Church in Yuquot Village (1929) and Sonny Assu, Re-Invaders: Digital Intervention of an Emily Carr Painting (2014). 5. Gallery 234 (2nd floor): “Indigenous (Canadian) art II”: Specifically: Kent Monkman The Academy (2008) 6. Gallery 227 Esmaa Mohamoud, A Seat Above the Table (2018) These spaces are marked in green on the map Installations #3-#5 are newly acquired works by indigenous artists. The arts of the indigenous peoples of this land were collected by the Royal Ontario Museum for their “ethnographic” collections (alongside natural history specimens), rather than by the AGO, an “art museum”. The AGO’s collections were primarily European and North American painting until relatively recently, when new geographical regions and the arts of the indigenous peoples of Canada began to be actively collected. For context about the indigenous peoples of Canada and the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s 2015 articles that inform the museum’s installations see: https://www(dot)thecanadianencyclopedia(dot)ca/en/article/aboriginal-people https://www(dot)cbc(dot)ca/news/entertainment/museums-review-indigenous-representation-1.5101817 https://en(dot)wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Truth_and_Reconciliation_Commission_of_Canada How to proceed: READ the Duncan & Wallace essay carefully, taking notes and summarizing its main arguments for yourself. You might write up a page or two of principal points just about the article before turning to the AGO part of the project. READ Chapter 3 of Dana Arnold’s Art History: Very Short Introduction, which concentrates on the institutions of art history, including museums. Because she discusses the history of museums and some contemporary examples, it will help you formulate questions about the AGO. Jot down the questions that you would want to answer at the AGO. Arnold’s chapter makes one aware of the significance of when a museum was founded; what its goals might have been at the time; how its collections come into being. This isn’t a research project — you are not expected to answer these questions about the AGO. And you are not allowed to use any research materials -– base your essay entirely on the museum itself. STUDY THE PLAN (see PDF in Quercus Module) Before visiting the museum itself in person study the plan of the museum that is also online: https://ago(dot)ca/visit/gallery-map. Analyze it. How much space is given to European art, Canadian art, First Nations art, African art, Latin American art, Asian art. How does the AGO comply with the museum types discussed by Duncan and Wallach?

Chapter 5 is all about learning behavior. Each and everyone one of us has acquired a number of behaviors over many, many years. And whether these behaviors are good, bad or extremely ugly, they were learned through one of the three learning theories we’ve been discussing (at least according to learning theorists). The great thing about learning is that if a behavior can be learned, odds are that it can be unlearned. In this reflection paper your goal is to: What is the behavior? Identify ONE BAD HABIT that you have LEARNED but would like to change. Choose ONLY ONE bad habit and focus on that. Do NOT choose something more complex that could be considered a personality trait or an emotion–that would be difficult to explain using learning theory. Remember, Behaviorists focus on OBSERVABLE, MEASURABLE behavior. For example, don’t say “I’d like to change my anger,” or “shyness”, or “my tendency to please others”–these are NOT good choices. These are emotions/personality traits that are not likley to be learned through behaviorist theories. BAD choices for this paper = anger, anxiety, shyness, rudeness, people pleasing etc. GOOD EXAMPLES for this paper= procrastination, nail biting, smoking, drinking, overeating, too much TV/videogames/social media, etc. These can ALL be easily measured so that you can Something that you can easily see if you begin doing more or less of this habit. Then briefly describe the behavior and how it has become problematic in your life. What learning theory applies? Identify which theory (classical conditioning, operant conditioning, or social-cognitive learning theory) best explains how you acquired the behavior and why? Be sure to use terminology that is appropriate to that learning theory. The point of your essay is to demonstrate your understanding of these theories and your ability to apply them accurately, so you MUST be detailed. How can you unlearn this behavior? Now that you have explained how you acquired this behavior, use learning theory to discuss how you can extinguish the behavior. Which learning theory (classical conditioning, operant conditioning, or social-cognitive learning theory) will you use to help unlearn the behavior and how? What is the specific plan? Again, be sure to use appropriate learning theory terminology. It is necessary to demonstrate an understanding of the material in Chapter 5, Module 3. Grammar, Spelling and Organization. This is a college level ESSAY and should be organized in essay format. An essay is NEVER one long paragraph. You should carefully spell check and grammar check your work. Try this: Read your essay OUT LOUD and see how it sounds. If there are sentences that make you pause, then they are not good sentences—fix them. Remember you may also utilize the writing center for assistance–they are excellent and can set up online appointments to help review your work. They can proofread a draft and offer suggestions ONLINE. The following grading rubric will be used, so make sure that you have accurately addressed each component. Remember, the point of the essay is to demonstrate an understanding of the theories presented in Chapter 5/Module 3 and your ability to accurately apply those theories: Topic Area Points ONE Problematic Bad/Habit Clearly Identified, Detailed & Measurable /3 Acquisition: Choose ONE theory (classical conditioning, operant conditioning OR social-learning theory) as the cause of your bad habit. Correctly explain how the behavior has caused the acquisition of your bad habit by using specific, detailed and correct terminology from the theory. /7 Extinction: Choose ONE theory (classical conditioning, operant conditioning OR social-learning theory) to plan for extinction of your bad habit. Correctly explain how you will apply the theory by using specific, detailed and correct terminology from the theory. /7 Overall quality: Clarity, organization, grammar, spelling and APA citations if applicable). /3 Other Guidelines: Papers MUST be submitted here. Emailed papers or attachments will not be accepted. You SHOULD type your essay directly into the assignment (you can exit and return as many times as you like until you hit the submit button). You can cut and paste from a word document BUT keep in mind that if you cut and paste IT MAY CHANGE the formatting of your work. If this happens you should fix the formatting to ensure proper essay format before submitting. The essay should be no more than 2 pages (approximately 500 words) in length, using 12 point font, double spaced (if you type directly into Canvas, it will double space for you). When you mention a concept or theory in your paper, be sure to provide a definition/explanation from the textbook. When you take a definition/explanation from the textbook, do not copy it word for word; instead, paraphrase in your own words and cite the textbook in APA style (Hockenbury and Hockenbury, 2016, pg #). BEWARE of PLAGARISM.
