Despite the number of European nations vying control for the North American continent, England won the struggle for several reasons. First, this was because of the larger English colonies as compared to other countries. It was shown that in the 1700s, around 250,000 non-Indian residents were living in English America. This is significantly larger than all other Europeans combined, such as the French (15,000) and the Spaniards (4500).
Second, the English colonies were also able to get more support in terms of resources and workforce for building their colonies. Since building colonies require many human resources and workforce, the English population had a significant advantage over other European colonists. This allows the English to diversify and improve their workforce distribution to build a sufficient and lasting colony.
Third, other Europeans also made poor decisions in terms of their strategy for colonization. For example, France decided to pursue its non-profitable fur trade to maintain support from the Indian military. This led them to incur losses, which made them fail in their colonization attempts. Another example was Spain’s failure to gain support despite the high inflation brought about by their discovery of precious metals such as silver and gold. In the end, because England focused on shifting towards a commercial (capitalist) economy rather than a mercantilist one, England flourished despite being in another land.

Reverse Garbage is a not-for-profit organization that creatively converts waste from landfills to items that are sold to the general public at a small fee. The organization accepts industrial discards from more than three hundred companies hence diverting them from landfills. Some of the materials include clothes and textiles, food and drinks packaging, furniture and fittings (Territory & Wales, 2010). The materials can be used by clients as art and craft, making costumes, making jewelry, film arts, theatre, and furniture. The company also offers education, educational tours and learning workshops for learning institutions and the general public (Maack, 2010). The organization was set up in 1974 by a team of teachers that was passionate about reducing the amount of solid waste that got its way into the landfills and promote the reusing of materials in their classroom. For the thirty-six years that the organization has been in operation, it has primarily focused on reducing land pollution, and providing the general public with affordable goods.
The company has several revenue streams. It encourages donations of waste from residences, companies and industries to prevent the waste from going to landfills. It sells the reusable and recyclable items to the general public at a low cost and raises funds from running learning workshops, creative reuse sessions, and educating students on environmental conservation (Maack, 2010). The services offered by the company are accessed by customers when they visit the workshop in Marrickville. The wide variety of the goods that are offered by the company are also available in the workshop. Alternatively, the company posts photos of some of the items that they have on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and customers make orders online. The items are then posted to them.
The current customers for Reverse Garbage include the lovers of art that stay around Marrickville and the online users that order the products on social media platforms. The number of people that lover art and would make use of the wide range of products are innumerable and scattered throughout the social media platforms. People that advocate for environmental sustainability could also provide a potential market for the products, since buying from Reverse Garbage would contribute greatly to reducing solid waste dumping in landfills. These prospective customers can be reached through popular social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook. The interaction between the company and clients on Twitter is limited. Most of the posts go without likes and retweets. There are almost zero replies on all the posts. On Facebook and Twitter, the company receives a handful of comments with people requesting for if they can donate items and placing orders. The company responds on the same day that the comments are left. Some of the replies, however, are left late on the following day. For most of the replies, the replies are just a direction to an email for a private transaction.
Content audit.
The most conspicuous items when you visit the Facebook page of Reverse Garbage is the cover page. At the time of this audit, the cover page was a green poster highlighting the hours that the company is open. The profile picture contains the logo of the company. The logo is white and pink themed. The page has a total of 86, 764 likes. Based on the opinion of 478 people, the company has a rating of 4.5 on a scale of one to five. Also conspicuous on the Facebook page is information regarding to the company. The about section gives the geographical location of the company; 8/142 Addison Road, Marrickville, New South Wales 2204. Next to the location, the company provides a link to the directions. It also contains a link to the website of the company, and the twitter handle of the company. One phone number, through which customers can communicate with the organization, is provided. The about section excellently outlines the company overview, the mission of the company, and the products offered by the company.
A quick google search of Reverse Garbage directs one to the website of the company and the Facebook page. The company posts at least one post every day. The posts are mainly meant for marketing the items that are offered by the company. The company also shares news about the various projects that the company is involved in. The page contains items the company thinks are most relevant at a given point. For instance, in the face of the widely spreading Covid-19 pandemic, the company is advertising their creatively made and beautiful face masks. The images of the items captured are of a high quality and eye-catching. It is difficult to scroll through the page without stopping to admire the beautiful items. For each of the items, the price of the items is displayed. The company also uses the Facebook page to pass well whishes to the customers during holidays such as Easter and Christmas.
The posts on the Facebook page are written in a clear and easy to understand language. They provide a brief description of the products before giving the price of the items. The posts, however, fail to give clear direction to the location where customers can find the items. The posts assume that the client had already gone through the about section of the page and found out the location. While the company provides a link to the online market where the people can shop for the products, most the posts do not direct the online users to the online market. While most of the posts are about self-promotion, the company also posts information that is useful to the followers. The company posts some of videos that guide people on various ways through which they can creatively divert residential waste. It also promotes the safety of the clients by encouraging them to stay at home during the pandemic.

Instructions: As Covid-19 cases increase, new restrictions have been put in place in Los Angeles County. On Sunday, November 22, it was announced that outdoor dining would no longer be allowed in Los Angeles County for at least three weeks. On Friday the 27th, the day after Thanksgiving, L.A. County announced a new stay-at-home order which prohibits all private and public gatherings which include people from multiple households, except for religious gatherings and political protests, and also puts additional occupancy limits on businesses.
From the LA Times:
• Officials have warned that even more strict rules — perhaps a more formal stay-at-home order — are likely if L.A. can’t begin to bend the curve on this third wave.
• Two months ago, officials estimated that 1 in 880 L.A. County residents were infected with the coronavirus; now, they believe it’s 1 in 145 and climbing, meaning the activities that people once enjoyed safely now pose more risk.
• Public health officials on Saturday reported 3,143 new cases of the virus and 19 deaths but said that the numbers were low because no community testing was offered on Thanksgiving, and only limited testing was performed the day after. Nonetheless, officials said, the proportion of tests coming back positive doubled over the last two weeks, reaching 7.4%.
• Even though she works outside at a kiosk — just outside Skechers — Anabel Velazquez worries about the health risk. She says people take offense when she reminds them to wear a mask or wear it properly — which is ironic because she sells masks and was herself sporting one with a Playboy logo.
From The Guardian:
• Restaurants across the state have also invested significant resources in setting up outdoor dining, which has added to the frustration with the shutdown. Guerrilla Tacos spent roughly $27,000 to create an outdoor space and has been selling out reservations, making a slim profit.
• Other LA restaurant owners said they were worried this shutdown would force them to permanently close.
• Some conservative parts of the state, including Huntington Beach, south of LA, have protested against Newsom’s restrictions, with some urging him to “open California” at a rally after curfew rules went into effect Saturday night.
• Newsom recently faced scrutiny after photos emerged of him dining out with other families at French Laundry, one of California’s most expensive and upscale restaurants. 2 pages / approx 550 words | APA | English (US) 🇺🇸 | Essay | Literature & Language | Undergraduate |
Instructions: 500 word response to the following questions. The paper should be written in the first-person voice. Be sure to write in full, complete sentences. You will be graded for content and quality of writing. Reflect on what you have learned in this lesson about diversity and marginalization and link it to either your personal life, or your future profession (child psychologist).
Part 1: Your reaction
Describe what you remember most from the lesson (what stood out the most) and where you felt most challenged.
Part 2: Your decisions
Describe how what you learned in this lecture will inform your personal life and/or your future profession.
Lesson Material for your reference:
Section One: What is Diversity and How Does it Impact Us?
In the 1980s there was not one country that allowed same sex marriage. Most people where either ‘out’, and very political about being LGBT or, most, were in the ‘closet’. Same sex couples were not allowed to adopt children and most people thought of HIV/AIDS as the ‘gay disease’.
Diversity and Marginalization:
Thinking back to high school, your school might have had a poster with the word “Welcome” in many different languages. You are probably reminded of those days where you celebrated the diversity of your peers and you ate different ethnic foods and may have been introduced to traditional clothes and dances. That certainly is one side of diversity: the idea and belief that Canada is an accepting multicultural mosaic. However, that is only one side of the coin. In fact, there has been a long tradition of scholars and activists challenging the notion of diversity and multiculturalism. One such person is the York University scholar, Himani Bannerji. In her 2000 book, The Dark Side of the Nation: Essays on Multiculturalism, Nationalism and Gender, Bannerji identifies what she terms the ‘paradox of diversity’. Using the term/description “women of colour” as an example, she argues that the description creates a “vague and pleasant” description that replaces race with ‘colour’ and suggests alliance among women. Doesn’t “women of colour” sound much more pleasant than “gender and race”? By changing the way that something is described (recall multicultural / diversity attempts at your high school), Bannerji argues we erase the realities of race, racism, white privilege, and oppression. Her point is that using the terms such as ‘women of colour’ reflects ideologies of power relations by serving to regulate power. This other perspective on diversity suggests that human diversity is not about ‘getting along’ but that human diversity is part of historical and ideological oppression. On a sliding scale where diversity and multiculturalism are on the one end, and anti-oppression / anti-racism are on the other, it’s easy to imagine where Bannerji sits.
To better understand white privilege, please read Peggy McIntosh’s (1988) excerpt about unpacking privilege (2 pages). As you read, take note of your thoughts and feelings.
The reason why I wanted to include this discussion is because it is easy to think of human diversity as a vibrant celebration of colour, foods and diverse traditions rather than to dig a bit deeper and think about the systemic issues such as oppression and privilege that accompany human diversity.
At this point, you are probably not surprised to hear that diversity in the context of community psychology is not so much about the ‘beauty of difference and getting along’ but about recognizing that “human diversity has multiple intersecting dimensions” and is “an important part of understanding differences and similarities between individuals and communities, but also variation within communities” (Kloos et al., 2012, pp. 7-8).
According to Rappaport (1977), community psychology “is an attempt to support every person’s right to be different without risk of suffering material and psychological sanctions” (p. 1). This will often require the community psychologist to work toward providing socially marginal people with the resources, the power, and the control over their own lives, which is necessary for a society of diversity rather than conformity” (p. 23).
Section Two: Power and Oppression
Recall Himani Bannerji’s argument that ideologies of diversity and multiculturalism serve to strengthen existing power relations such as racism, oppression of others and white privilege. What do we mean when we refer to power and oppression? According to Kloos and colleagues (2012), “oppression occurs in a hierarchical relationship in which a dominant group unjustly holds power and resources and withholds them from another group” (p. 231).
The Social Construction of Power:
To make those concepts livelier, I’d like you to watch a very interesting video on the social construction of oppression. In this video, you will watch a third grade teacher simulate the social construction of discrimination by introducing a two-day exercise to her class where students were intentionally discriminated against based on the colour of their eyes.
Oppression and Colonization:
As you have seen in this lesson, there are many forms of oppression. It can be overt (obvious and intentional) and it can also be covert (unintentionally discriminating against an individual or group of individuals based on pre-conceived assumptions that we have—biases that often come from “single stories”).
Another important concept to learn is “intersectionality”. Intersectionality refers to the interconnections between multiple socially constructed categorizations (e.g., race, gender, social class). Oppression of an individual or group with multiple intersecting personal identities becomes driven by multiple intersecting systems of discrimination and marginalization (Kloos et al., 2012). For example, examining the social mechanisms that drive violence against lesbian women of colour must consider the overlapping, complex nature of the various systems of oppression—rather than examining each factor separately.
Oppression can also be systemic. For example, the colonization of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals, families, and communities is a form of oppression that has persisted throughout the history of Canada and continues to exist today.
So far in this course, you have learned a bit about some of the inequalities and discrimination faced by Aboriginal people in Canada. Now that you have also been introduced to different ways of understanding and honouring diversity, I would like for you to read a brief chapter (14 pages) written by a Mohawk woman , Patricia Monture-Angus, who worked as a legal scholar in several Canadian law schools.
This chapter is a story of her experience as “a woman, an Indian, and an Indian woman” (note: intersectionality) attending an academic conference about oppression. She challenges language around “disadvantage” and speaks about her experiences as a “minority”. She teaches important lessons about diversity and oppression that I think is a good way to wrap up this lesson. 1 page / approx 275 words | APA | English (US) 🇺🇸 | Essay | Social Sciences | Undergraduate |
Instructions: Please read the instruction exactly , and the citation should be the college art history coverage.
In this week’s lesson, and in previous weeks, we have discussed works of art and the contexts in which they exist/are shown. How does seeing an object in its original context, and in a new (and perhaps unintended) context, change the way a work of art communicates? What, for example, is the difference between seeing a medieval altarpiece in the context of the church ( and perhaps a particular chapel) for which it was made versus seeing the same altarpiece at the Museum of Fine Arts behind glass? Or, seeing a Minimalist cube in a gallery for which it was made versus outdoors in an open-air courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art?
Along with the differences, are there any similarities in the two experiences (“original” versus new settings)? Please note that the point here is not to choose a “favorite” setting (original or new), but simply to reflect on the similarities and differences in the experience of the work of art when its setting has changed.
Finally, can you cite at least one example of a work of art discussed in this course in which the original setting has been changed? Discuss.

At this point, you have selected a product or service to write about and have analyzed market opportunities. This week your challenge will be to focus in on the target market. To be effective, a target market needs to be identifiable (you must know who and where they are in detail), persuadable (you have to convince them to part with their hard-earned money for your product or service), able to pay (goes without saying), and substantial, that is, big enough so that they produce enough sales to meet your top line projections. ( I PICKED BEAT BY DRE SPEAKER)
The relevant chapter to guide you is Chapter 7. In part one of the assignment you need to consider each of the following topics, and then address those that apply to your target. Topics that are relevant to every product and service are marked with dollar sign, which I think to be an appropriate indicator.
