Yanomami Warfare
In the field of Anthropology, one of the most widely-studied group was that of the Yanomami tribe that lives in the forests of Southern Venezuela and Norther Brazil. Specifically, one of the main reasons for the popularity of this group is because it demonstrates how different forces could affect the way of living of each one. For example, in terms of warfare, several anthropologists have given their opinion on how the different factors lead to the inherent violence and fierceness of the said tribe. However, there are three main fields which aims to explain this characteristic, which are biological, materialist, and cultural camps.
One of earliest attempts to explain the violence of the Yanomami group was done by Napoleon Chagnon, using the biological approach. According to him, the main reason for why there exist a high inter-personal and inter-group violence is because the characteristics (or values) that these actions also lead to greater reproductive success. As discussed in the field of evolutionary anthropology, one of the main inclinations of man is that to reproduce and to survive. Consequently, fierceness is necessitated by the harsh conditions of the Venezuelan jungle, since it helps the men to find more reproductive partners and to protect their offspring.
Another major camp that seeks to explain the inherent violence within the Yanomami group was that of the Materialist. As according to Ferguson, the main reason why the Yanomami group is violent is due to their exposure to Western goods such as axe, bolos, and firearms. On the one hand, these are some of the most precious ones that could help in their day to day life. On the other hand, the remoteness of the place is also the reason why the supply for these goods are only limited. Thus, this camp believes that high-demand and low supply of these commodities are the main reason why violence arises from among the group.
Lastly, the cultural reason simply states that violence is part of their Yanomami’s daily life. Particularly, they believe that these helps to support the system and structures amidst the difficulties that they are facing. For the cultural camp, support for these infrastructures is important because it helps in the preservation of peace among the group. More particularly, however, this support and stability is said to stem from their beliefs in revenge and sorcery. These are some of the main traditions and beliefs of the Yanomami group, and thus doing these beliefs help in the overall harmony of everyone.
All in all, it shows that each of the camps have their own sides on why the Yanomami group is inherently violent and fierce. However, while each of them have a different explanation of these reasons, each of them also provides a criticism of the other. Nonetheless, by looking at all of the points of these camps, it could be seen that a more holistic approach could be established as to the Yanomami’s characteristics.

Go through approximately three to four different articles written on the topic (e.g. on removing harmful COVID-19 related stories from Twitter, an example of which appears in the following: https://www.theverge.com/2020/4/22/21231956/twitter-remove-covid-19-tweets-call-to-action-harm-5g (Links to an external site.)) and on the basis of your readings and knowledge of course concepts, readings and online discussions, form an informed opinion as to why that particular story is of importance in our society. Instructions: 1) Explain the context of your primary text (what are the various issues at stake, positions people take, and relevance to our discussions?)
2) What’s your thinking so far on that text? (remember that that thinking may change as you conduct your research)
3) Discuss the kinds of research you expect to have to do in order to explore that topic more thoroughly (will you be looking exclusively at scholarly journals? Are there relevant popular resources you may use?).
While your particular primary and secondary texts are up to you, everyone must select from within the following three umbrella topics:
• The empowerment or disenfranchisement of particular social groups through the use of comedy, including race, class, and/or gender
o Consider comics who take on race, class, gender, sexuality explicitly in their work and examine how they engage those topics and to what end.
• The rhetorical value of irony
o Consider comics like Stephen Colbert who employ irony as their primary method of advancing an argument – what are they able to accomplish through those ends and are there limits?
• Rhetorical transgression
o Consider comics who “go too far.” What can an examination of how a particular comic has gone too far help us understand our culture and society? What’s the difference between Tig Notaro and Dave Chappelle?

Instructions: General Instructions: Write in a thoughtful, clear, and complete manner with a thesis statement and by writing full sentences, paragraphs, and transitions.
Do not use direct quotations. It is essential that you learn to paraphrase or summarize. You will be expected to use MLA in-text citations and Works Cited at the end of each assignment for the primary source article and any other articles or websites you used to develop your response. Italicize works of art, just as you would like books and film.
Assignment Instructions: Select one of the four (4) works of art from the previous Analysis (Case Study) Resources page to focus on to conduct your first visual analysis. Provide a thoughtful and well developed visual analysis based on the techniques practiced leading up to this assignment. The final product should be a 2-page paper.
Your initial reading is a close examination of the work you’ve chosen before you read about it. In order to describe what you see, you might consider:
What do you notice first? Why? What do the colors convey? How? How is the space occupied? Is there a foreground and a background (2D) or is the piece sculptural (3D) with mass and volume? Is there an implied shape, such as a triangle, square, or circle, that brings balance to the composition? Are there diagonal lines that make it dynamic?
Next, read the materials provided about the work of art. You are welcome to do additional research on the internet as long as you use reputable websites, such as those from museums and art publications. Go back to your piece and take an even closer look. Think about what you’ve read and what you see. How does its meaning deepen from additional information the work of art?
Then, consider how the formal elements play into the artist’s intention or audience’s interpretation of the work. Making connections and observations about form and content are the key to writing a strong analysis. Remember to cite as appropriate. Refer to your Plagiarism Quiz as a refresher.
Include several of areas from the first and second points to bring you to the third point.

Instructions: Please read the instruction exactly , and the citation should be the college art history coverage.
In this week’s lesson, and in previous weeks, we have discussed works of art and the contexts in which they exist/are shown. How does seeing an object in its original context, and in a new (and perhaps unintended) context, change the way a work of art communicates? What, for example, is the difference between seeing a medieval altarpiece in the context of the church ( and perhaps a particular chapel) for which it was made versus seeing the same altarpiece at the Museum of Fine Arts behind glass? Or, seeing a Minimalist cube in a gallery for which it was made versus outdoors in an open-air courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art?
Along with the differences, are there any similarities in the two experiences (“original” versus new settings)? Please note that the point here is not to choose a “favorite” setting (original or new), but simply to reflect on the similarities and differences in the experience of the work of art when its setting has changed.
Finally, can you cite at least one example of a work of art discussed in this course in which the original setting has been changed? Discuss.
